RE: Week 22 - WTA Grand Slam ($13M) Paris, France Clay

A few things come out of this little exchange on Twitter today:

@simonrbriggs: "@Kfish_WTA hi my desk asking when GB last had 2 x top 50 women in a slam. Can u help? Many thanks"

@Kfish_WTA: "@simonrbriggs Heather and Laura have both been in Top 50 for last 17 weeks (since w/o Jan 28)"

Me (rudely butting in LOL): "@Kfish_WTA @simonrbriggs They were 50/53 at the start of the AO though (47/50 the week b4) so I'd guess AO 1985 (Croft/Durie) or a slam in 86(?)"

@Kfish_WTA: "@GBtennis @simonrbriggs (missed the Slam part sorry)"

Me: "@Kfish_WTA @simonrbriggs They were 50/53 at the start of AO though (47/50 the week b4) so I'd guess AO 1985 (Croft/Durie) or a slam in 86(?)"
"@simonrbriggs Unfortunately I only have y/end WTA ranking data (they don't have a full history like the ATP) so only they can confirm 100%"

@Kfish_WTA: "@GBtennis @simonrbriggs the w/o June 22, 1987 (entering Wimbledon) there were 2 Brits in @WTA Top 50 - No.41 @Jodurie and No.49 Gomer"

Me: "@Kfish_WTA @simonrbriggs Thanks. So I was close but not close enough - wish WTA had historical intra-year rankings online like the ATP "

@Kfish_WTA: "GBtennis @simonrbriggs Certainly is a work in progress"

1) given that it looks like Heather will still be top 50 on Monday, this will be the first time since 1987 that GB has had top 50 women playing in the same slam

2) statisticians make mistakes, but if you put two of them together, they'll manage to sort out the right answer in the end LOL (that kind of works on this forum too, of course)

3) me using the only 1980s/90s WTA rankings I have (i.e. the year-end ones) to estimate these things can be dangerous (Gomer was 59 and 73 at the 1986 and 1987 year-ends respectively but just sneaked inside the top 50 in the middle of the year)

... and given 3), the most important thing to come out of it (for me, at least, but I imagine some other people here might be interested too) is the news that they are aiming to get historical WTA rankings up at some point in the future

The draw is tomorrow, but for the life of me I can't find anywhere, on the RG site, or elsewhere, that states at what time of day the draw is made and will be up.
Does anyone know when it is due to take place?

Event info A-Z

The great unknown at the start of every tournament is of course the draw. It is traditionally held on the Friday of qualifiers week, at around 11.30 am. The draw that will be performed on Friday 24 May this year will be "semi-electronic". It will begin with the women's singles: the (96) unseeded players will be placed electronically in the draw. The 32 seeds will then be drawn "manually", a procedure that is usually performed by the reigning men's champion, namely Rafael Nadal. The men's singles will then be drawn in the same way, with Maria Sharapova, who won the women's singles in 2012, drawing the seeds.

But with all these difficulty we both played very good! Tomorrow I am 2nd match after 10 court 14 vs Zhou #rolandgarros"

I think Laura is up against a seed, based on what I can tell from the video (at a guess one of 13-16)

Bally gets Erakovic

Wozniacki for Laura - interesting match.

Once it was apparent Laura had to face one of the top 16 seeds, this isn't a bad draw but still not great overall. Weather conditions likely to strongly favour Wozniacki, though I've just checked and the forecast is improving.

Bally and Hev should be happy enough with their draws and can help each other out as Bally beat Voegele last week and Hev has played lots of doubles with Erakovic.

Laura's draw is Wozniacki, then Jovanovski/Q, then Makarova/Kuznetsova (or less likely Parmentier/Rybarikova), then Kerber/Lepchenko (or 6 others), then Serena

With Laura you never quite know if she's going to crash out first round or go deep. An in form Sveta would be very tough.

Wozniacki has been dire on the clay this year (less so in previous seasons) but did reasonably well on hard prior to that, making the final of Indian Wells, semi of Dubai.

On clay in 2013, no wins, 4 losses to Carla Suarez Navarro 6-7(6) 1-6, Shvedova 2-6 4-6, a crazy match against Jovanovski 6-2 4-6 6-7(5) and this week Zheng 2-6 4-6

Sveta's results this year on the clay not as impressive as you might have expected given her class on the surface and form on hard earlier in the year. Lost to Halep 1-6 1-6 in the first round of Rome. Beat Petrova then lost to Kerber in 3 sets in Madrid. Beat Lepchenko in Estoril before losing to Oprandi in the quarters.

Makarova has some super wins this year beating Azarenka and Bartoli in Madrid, Kerber and Bartoli earlier in the year in Aus Open on hard. Strange loss in last match to Oudin in Rome, retired when 2-4 behind in 3rd set.

Jovanovski lost to Lepchenko in 3 sets in Brussels. Only win on clay this year against Caroline Wozniacki, heavy losses to Jankovic and Goerges. Also lost Fed Cup indoors on clay to Kerber and Barthel (3 sets).

Looks like Laura's serve is going to be the key. If she serves really well then she could make the quarters. Can't imagine she would get away with an average, or even poor, serving display against Makarova or Kuznetsova. Wozniacki could be tricky if she wakes up from her slump especially if the conditions are slow.

The advantage for Laura of playing an out of form seed is the slightly easier path if she does win R1 - but not as good as I was hoping with Makarova and Kuznetsova both tricky R3 opponents if she were to get that far.

On the plus side, Heather's draw looks pretty good, Zakopalova in R2 and she has only won one match since Miami. I think she would struggle against Kirilenko in R3 even without it being her first tournament back, but a realistic chance to defend her 160 points.

Cibulkova for Bally in round 2 which would be tough.

Does anyone know if there is a structure for who plays when in Roland Garros? The good thing about the Wimbledon draw is I instantly know which day the matches are going to be on.
