RE: Cameron Norrie

Jonny has pretty much confirmed that there are no others. I assume he'd know!

"Nice to get the ATP ranking today. Me and @Norriie have just agreed that we could take down the other Scots in the list;) #murray #baker #oh"

Both Rosenzweig & Beaus-Barquin are on the LTA list for North Scotland but they don't play for GB so they don't count!

Interesting interview with Cameron's mother about the long-term reasons behind his switch.

http://bit.ly/13jbtt8

Unsurprisingly, it's not just the UK where the funding issue causes plenty of battles ...

Also, an 'interesting' headline/pic combination in the Times http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/sport/tennis/article3764958.ece

(basically it says "Cameron Norrie the latest foreigner to join Britains ranks" with a big pic of Brydan Klein underneath)

Also, is "foreigner" really the right word for someone with a British parent and, presumably, a British passport? (checks dictionary - maybe it is)

I do hope that this move is the "start" from Cameron, I would hate it to turn out as a finishing line crossed after so long without help. Can only say fingers crossed for the lad and certainly wish him all the best.

On the latest Zootennis blogpost: tenniskalamazoo.blogspot.co.uk/

I'll have more links to signing announcements in a few days, but I wanted to single out a couple of former ITF Top 10 juniors who formally committed today. Cameron Norrie, who recently switched his ITF flag from New Zealand to Great Britain, has committed to the University of Michigan. The 18-year-old Norrie, currently No. 32 in the ITF junior world rankings but as high as 10 back in the spring, will enter Michigan next fall.

Well done, Mr Norrie. The University of Michigan is ranked #20 in the world (in terms of education) by The Times: www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2012-13/world-ranking. Don't know how good its tennis team has been ... though have every confidence it will be very good from this point forward!

Apparently Cam isn't going to Michigan after all, though he is still going to college in the US:

It may have been noted elsewhere in this or another section (I tend to dip in and out), but just in case ... over in the entries and rankings section, I'd queried whether Cameron Norrie was taking the Autumn term off, given that he was playing six Challengers, and The Optimist helpfully posted an article which suggests that he is:

TCU has been fabulous for Cam but he is running out of competition on the College circuit and given Dans progress at the US open today it puts Cam's in perspective, ie. He lost to a guy who has just had a match point and lost in 5 to the world number 3!

It's great to find a Cameron Norrie fan thread! He's leaped up to #278 in the ATP rankings with two Futures tourney wins this summer and 1 Challenger final as well. He's now the 6th highest ranked U.K. player! He flew back to NZL for the "summer" after the Waco Futures tourney (he lost to Dominic Koepfer,a German Tulane player, who was the ITA #1 for most of last Spring) and is expected back at TCU for the Spring. But first, he's likely to stop over at the Maui Challenger in late January. He's ranked high enough now so that he qualifies for the main draw at most Challenger tourneys; having advanced beyond having to qualify for the Futures as recently as last year. His goal is to play Davis Cup for the U.K. and he's not far off already, with two more years expected at TCU.

TCU has also signed Alastair Gray, a top-rated British junior originally from Twickenham, who now lives in Surrey, so now the Frogs will have two top British players on the team. And Luke Bambridge, a friend of Cam, Alastair and Alex Rybakov (another TCU player from Florida) also has practiced at the TCU tennis center often. Gray was a teenaged hitting partner for Andy Murray before last year's Wimbledon. Alastair has been in Cyprus for much of the past month for the Futures tourneys in Larnaca, Limassol and Nicosia.

One of the reasons Cam is returning to TCU is because the Frogs have a really good chance to win the NCAA championship this year - TCU finished 3rd nationally last season and hopes are high for the first championship ever. Norrie is ranked 2nd in the preseason ITA rankings (behind Denmark's Mikael Torpegaard, who plays for Ohio State). TCU has led the nation in attendance for 4 straight seasons. If anyone is interested in following (and talking about) Cam and Alastair and TCU, please drop by the TCU fan site the Frog Horn where we try to follow all their matches closely (both pro and college). TCU's first match is against Northwestern on 1/20 - Cam will probably be in Maui then, but Alastair's Frog debut is expected then.

Howdee Jared and thank you very much for posting again, any updates very welcome, Cam as one of, ad probably our the best British prospect outside the top 100 is followed very closely in various threads across the whole site.

Any general updates about TCU's performances would be very welcome in the general College tennis thread where most of the information comes from the college websites, particularly now Ali G (who has a very big following in Staines) has joined you.

I am sure you won't be suprised to find that there are about 100 British players of either sex in US College tennis, and they are all followed to varying degrees particular those ranked highly as juniors (predominantly due to the great work of the O). Interestingly you will see Memphis for a number of years has resembled little Britain and we have some issues with Long Beach's coach on recruiting on the ladies side. Any views from stateside welcome.

I wonder if Cam qualifies for ATP Auckland and gets a few rounds as well as making good progress in Noumea and Maui whether he may postpone his return to TCU a bit longer or decide to go pro?

Excuse my ignorance, but what does TCU stand for and why are these US/English team called Frogs (who I associate with French)?

American college is essentially an interfaith sporting battle ground, in Dallas you also have SMU (southern Methodist ), the top sporting catholic school being the mighty Notre Dame, so famous for football that they have their own contract with abc to broadcast their games coast to coast, the Hedonists are heavily represented at USC, the Fundamentals of Rastapharianism are practice at Colorado and then there is BYU (Morman), Mr Brigham Young was generally not a nice man yet still has his name attached to what is another college sporting powerhouse.

An amazing academic melting point of belief with opportunities to suit anyone if they can afford to pay for it.
