Week 18 - Greece F5 ($10,000) - Iraklion (hard)

It didn't have an earlier thread because there were no Brits in qualifying and yes all 4 of the Brits playing in doubles are DAs in the singles.

PS: We aren't Greek so it's Heraklion, not Iraklion.

I wondered how long it would take someone to query that!  I did it quite deliberately & I think you'll find that either spelling is acceptable - see here - though "Heraklion" is arguably more common in the English-speaking world, I imagine because English-speakers are easily misled by the "H" in the Greek name which is in fact an "I".  We're not Italians, either, yet you put "Napoli" in the title of the Naples Challenger thread! wink

Ah but Napoli is the official name of the tournament where as the ITF clearly cite this venue as being "Heraklion".

Further ro what Steven says, the relevant authorities (the ITF) say the tournament venue is "Heraklion".

Perhaps Stircrazy will be reporting on the Wrecsam and Caerdydd futures later in the year wink

Unless I've missed it, I'm a bit surprised this one hasn't had a thread devoted to it yet!

R1:  (1) Lewis Burton & Ed Corrie WR 703 vs Andrew Carter & Charalampos Kapogiannis (USA/GRE) UNR
R1:  (4) Josh Milton & Andrew Whittington (AUS) WR 1993 vs Christopher Stoikoudis & Ethan Tulliani (AUS/AUS) UNR
R1:  Kevin Jordi & Michael Laser (SUI/USA) UNR vs (2) James Marsalek & Elie Rousset (FRA) WR 1029

The main draw for the singles still isn't available, as the qualies have yet to be completed, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that all four Brits will be in it as DAs. wink

I'm not that fussed either way, except that it may confuse people to use different names for the same venue in consecutive weeks, so I guess I do have a preference for using Heraklion again.

However, the convention I've always assumed (since until now, other people seem to have adhered to it too) is to use what it says on the official drawsheet (with the addition of the relevant accents for those of us who are so inclined LOL), which for tournaments below ATP main tour level tends to mean local names except where the local language uses non-Roman characters.

Just to take this week as an example:

Napoli for the Challenger in Italy, as on http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2013/443/mds.pdf (even though the anglicised version is Naples)

An-ning for the Challenger in China, as on http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2013/6572/mds.pdf (even though the Pinyin version of it doesn't have the hyphen)

and hence Heraklion for this tournament, as on http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2013/6681/qs.pdf

I think the ATP conventions are a bit dodgy (especially since if they had a main tour event in Napoli, I'm sure they'd call it Naples!), but it seems simplest for all concerned if we go with them.

No chance! no  In any case, "Iraklion" is not the Greek name for the place, merely an alternative English spelling which just happens to be closer to the Greek than "Heraklion".  The Greek name, transliterated, would be "Iráklio"... wink

What a wretched draw for Mr Corrie.

Not ideal but it shouldn't be a huge problem.

L32: (1) Ed Corrie WR 333 beat Filip Peliwo (CAN) WR 646 6-3 6-1

That's a fantastic win for Ed, following on from a solid SF last week (but a surprisingly one-sided loss to the eventual tournament winner, who also won the tournament in Greece the prior week, so his form was excellent).

4 breaks of serve, no BPs faced himself. No DFs. A thrashing really

Peliwo was the 2012 junior world #1, reaching all 4 GS finals, and winning 2. No mug, in fact just the opposite

Well done Ed!

Peliwo was a very good junior and had had some modest success at senior level but he has only won 3 matches all year and by all accounts is struggling to make the transition from top junior to good senior player. I don't think he was ever likely to trouble Ed in this match.

I thought Ed would win too, but the scoreline suggests it was a great performance
