How weak is qualifying - i think there were just 3 players with rankings and one was WC Anna Smith, who would have made the main draw if she applied in time.

Perhaps not all that surprising this week, as there are 15 (fifteen!) ITF womens events and also 2 WTA events.
If all qualifying events were fully subscribed, that would be equivalent to more than half of all the women ranked players in action in the one week.
Week 16 had just 7 ITF events total - Federation Cup obviously a factor. Week 15, only 8 ITF & 1 WTA.

Data I post, opinions I offer, 'facts' I assert, are almost certainly all stupidly wrong.
Jade is top seed, but not expecting too much given recent form. Lucy seeded 8th and hopefully this week is when she will pick up a few ranking points as she has a qualifier, followed by the winner of two x qualifiers.
3 WC's have drawn seeds - tough, but should have several Brits picking up ranking points given the number of qualifiers and two all Brit draws before qualifiers are placed.

Hi grant will probably see you in Edinburgh as I am going for a couple of days. Standard will not be great in the womens but Anna Brogan and Maia Lumsden should be there also Harriet Dart == top British player should be Jane windley I think
Shame that Katy Dunne had to withdraw at the last minute (she also pulled out of the British Tour semis last week). Given the weakness of this field she would have had an excellent chance of qualifying and winning her first main draw match(es)
The main draw is already out to allow some matches to take place tomorrow, even though qualifying is yet to finish (in fact the 5 slots above eighth seed Lucy Brown are all reserved for qualifiers). Gabi Taylor's debut could have been kinder - it is against Aussie sixth seed Karolina Wlodarczak, a semifinalist in Edinburgh last year.
