Week 16 - Challenger ($100,000) - Sarasota, FL, USA (clay)

Kyle has got a main draw wild card, but believe it or not:

L32: James Ward WR 217 v Kyle Edmund WR 517

GB's top clay court player other than Andy against the player who may well fit that description before too long.

To make things worse, the winner will play top seed Michael Russell or former world no. 45 Mischa Zverev in R2.

Week 15 - Challenger (€100,000) - Sarasota, FL, USA (hard)

My initial thoughts too. But there's another 5 months of data to collate which could change things dranatically.

Putting GB bragging rights aside, should be a cracking match! Interesting dynamic for Kyle to get 8 points on the outcome of 1 match, rather than having to win 5 matches for a single point against very decent opposition only back in January.

That's another wretched draw. I don't think the outcome has any particular wider significance (famous last words) but it's pretty horrid for them both after they shared the experience of the Davis Cup together ... and would both like to do well coming off it. Worse yet given that certainly Ward's chances against almost everyone in the draw saving perhaps (and only perhaps) the top two seeds would be not bad ... so the chances that both could have progressed would have been high.

No, it has always been on clay (my fault - I was in a rush, copied the title from another Challenger thread and missed two of the changes I should have made) and yes, James has won the title here before, back in 2009 when he became the first Brit to win a clay court Challenger this century.

It is easy to confuse with Savannah (by which I mean I have done so in the past!), which is also on clay and is where James won the doubles title with Jamie Baker in 2010.

Cheers Steven - I thought it was the "famous" clay challenger.

Can't believe its 4 years since all those "first Brit to win a clay tournament since the middle ages" headlines

At least this draw ensures that one Brit gets 8 points from the week and from Kyle's perspective it is actually a pretty good draw.

Actually I think it's a poor draw for James because of who he is likely to play in round 2. He is only defending 3 points this week but a whopping 52 next so he really needs a good run either this week or next week. 8 points would be a good haul for Kyle but not for James.
