Week 16 - ATP Masters 1000 - Monte Carlo (Clay) - Doubles

It has all worked out for the best for Mr Marray in the end, I suspect. And whatever my dreams of singles success were, if I saw that my attempts to make my singles career weren't going very well and at the same time experienced the rather more comfortable life of a top doubles player, I'd change my mind too.

I hope Marray dishes out a couple of bagels to his "I'm concentrating on my singles career" ex-partner.

Not remotely related - but Julian Knowle has THE skinniest legs on the tennis pro tour.  I've never quite understood how he's managed to play on them; makes Gilles Simon's pins look massive.

Aww, it was and is Freddie's choice to make. Though maybe Jonny could inquire of Freddie just how that singles career is getting on.

Early start for Colin and Jonny tomorrow. First match on court 2 at 10:30 (9:30 BST).

I hope that some of the stuff about Freddie in this thread isn't serious. He never said that he was going to commit solely to his singles career but that he wanted to continue to play both singles and doubles and this obviously ruled out a long term partnership with Jonny. Given that they seemed to be genuinely good friends I can't imagine that there is any bad blood between them so there is really no need for snide remarks about Freddie.

Bizarre tie break. They led *4-0 and 6-3*, trailed 6-7* and won it 9-7

Glad to see them win. They needed that, given the obstacles they've both had to overcome this year.

RJA, thank you for your point. My comment wasn't meant to be snide: I assumed that Mr Nielsen had wanted to do both singles and doubles, but had made an entirely rational choice at a certain point that it was better to be a top doubles player as well rather than just a futures-level singles player ... and was changing his focus somewhat to maintain his options when the Wimbledon points drop off. I do think that things have worked out for the best for Mr Marray; it must have been tough to be partner-less after having done so well, and it's lovely to see that he's been able to do something which helped both him (as Mr Fleming is excellent) and Mr Fleming.

It all went pear-shaped in the second set:

R2:   Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi & Jean-Julien Rojer (PAK/NED) WR 4 defeated Colin Fleming & Jonny Marray WR 45 by 4 & 1  bleh
