Tommy Mac I have queued for several years at Wimbledon. My advice is get there no later than 730 am to stand a chance on the Monday. You are given a number by the stewards when you arrive hold on to that when you get to the gates you pay your money nobody checks your ticket once your in. Just be prepared for all the razzamatazz of freebies etc outside the ground. And of course can take about 4 hrs as they don't open the gates till 10/1030 but it is a good atmosphere.
I dont know if someone has already mentioned this but last year when Kyle Edmund got his wildcard he was ranked 442, and i know i have already said this but wimbledon have to look at Katy Dunne and Katie Boulter. They have given Katy 2 qualy wildcards now and her ranking is up around 300 places this year alone and also Katie if she does well next week in Roland Garros i think they should both be considered. They should both also be given wildcards into the main draw of the big grass court events coming(either nottingham or birmingham) up to prove what they have and if they do well then like kyle last year get given wimby wc.
Yes, the LTA in recent years have always added very good young players as an exception to the WR 250 minimum target.
Personally I feel that although Kyle was indeed very far from the top 250 last year, there was much more chance of him being competitive in the men's event than Katy and Katie would be in the women's. There is essentially much more depth in ranking terms of men who can be competitive with the top men than equivalently with the women.
I would certainly give Katy and Katie Wimbledon Q WCs, but not MD WCs.
I would agree with Indiana. Very unlikely any of our males in the top 400 be thrashed whereas bakery products more likely against any of our women outside the top 250.
I don't think either Katy or Katie are ready for the MD. Better to be in qualifying, pressure is off and more chance of getting a win or two and getting ranking points and experience. A jump straight into the MD could be too much for them too soon. They are both still very young and if they keep improving should be in line for MDWC's next year
To be honest I think "competitive" in the mens game is a bit masked by the fact that you can get absolutely demolished and still end up with a "respectable" looking scoreline of 62 62 63 or something simply because there is much more serve dominance in the men's game and you are going to be able to pick up free points far more easily than the women can.
But yes, Katy and Katie would be completely out of their depths at the moment (let's not forget that Katy has played qualies for a couple of years and stuggled badly, although she does seem to have come on leaps and bounds this year).
So, I'd expect MD WCs for Naomi, Sam and Tara ( and, yes, I am aware that top 250 is a minimum requirement rather than a right to a MD WC recommendation ) and to Katy, under the young player exception ( assuming that the LTA acknowledge Week 24 performances ! )
The fact that there are only 4 candidates realistic chance of being given a MD WC means they should all get one. The only reason I could see top 250 players not get a wild card is if it meant giving out a lot in total (which might have been the case had Heather and JoKo not made the main draw by right). Katy's run has come at the perfect time too and I would be surprised if she doesn't get a wild card.
I would agree with the last two posts and a fair about of media coverage for Katy will help the cause further. The more interest there is higher the player profile the better the chance. It is a business as well at the end of of the day. And if Kyle gets one it would only be fair to give his 19yr old equivalent one. Their rankings in fact by the time Wimbledon comes round will only be about 50 places of a difference I believe.
Katy seems to think she's getting a qualies wild card
After her first match against a player inside the top 50 the British No.10 said: I never really expected to win the first set and I didn't expect it to be a three set match. Once it went into a third, the smart decision was to obviously pull out because I have Wimbledon coming up and I don't want to make it worse. She added: Ive got a week before qualies, so Ill just stay here and use the physios and get as much treatment as possible. Ice, all day, everyday. Do absolutely anything I can because I am really desperate to play, but hopefully it will be OK because it is minor-ish at the moment." I am really starting to believe I can get to this level, definitely".
Re the Wimbledon WC situation, Katy is certainly not someone to count her chickens, though it seems very reasonable to assume ( maybe she's even been told ) that she will at least get a Q WC.
But if Kyle gets a MD WC and Katy doesn't, I think there could be a little discussion.
