Good draw for JoKo in singles; but not in doubles with Nic. Though she will get doubles practice against an Argentinian, on clay, which might prove useful.

R1: KONTA, Johanna (GBR) 154 [4] vs. EVTIMOVA, Dia (BUL) 251 (CH: 145 10/2011)
H2H: 1-0 2010 Lutz USA 6-4 2-6 6-2

Conny Perrin (SUI) 281 or Beatriz García Vidagany (ESP) await the winner.

R1: KONTA, Johanna/SLATER, Nicola (GBR/GBR) 835 vs. FICHMAN, Sharon/MOLINERO Florencia (CAN/ARG) 361 [1]

Seeing the draw sheet is the sole positive of chronic toothache getting me up at 04:00!

Apropos of absolutely nothing, I've just realised that Johanna does not pronounce her name Jo-han-na, but Yo-han na.
As she is known as JoKo, surely that is Yo-ko and ample scope for the high level punsters in these parts to flex their groan inducing skills about both the Beatles and/or the Egg Lady. Perhaps even combine the two; not, "I am the egg man," but, "she is the egg girl."
See, I told you it was nothing. Toothache makes you delirious I guess.

I always assumed that it was Yo-han'na given that it's a central European name (though there was always a chance that she might have anglicised it (*)) and that got confirmed when Judy pronounced it that way on a Fed Cup video. Judy might well have pronounced it "J" if it was actually "Y" but there's no way she'd have pronounced it "Y" if that wasn't correct. Yet I've never been tempted by a Beatles pun because I'm pretty sure most people read "JoKo" as if it is pronounced with an English J and wouldn't get it.

(*) My girlfriend, Julia, is German, so we come across this issue all the time and she quickly got to the stage where she doesn't even bother to pronounce her name the right way for work purposes in the UK because of the confused looks and "what did you say your name was?" reactions she always got when she did. Though needless to say, that still causes confusion if work and non-work ever collide. LOL I guess with tennis players being such an international crowd, people are a bit more open to the same name being pronounced in different ways.

Anyway, full marks to Yoody wink for making the effort to get it right in Johanna's case.

I can't promise never to be tempted by a JoKo Beatles pun, but I do know that with most people, it'll fall even flatter than my usual puns (and that's saying something!) if I try. biggrin

Joko tweeted to say she won 0n0, rather appropriately.

if that was against Evtimova, that's a stunning result. Even if a LL replaced Evtimova, it's great - her 5th double bagel in senior ITFs in singles (the last was against Kalhorn in Dothan 50K qualifying a year ago) but her 2nd in a main draw, 1st at 25K level.

I thought I had to do it on Twitter now if I was ever (*) going to do it. Then dig myself deeper. disbelief

(*) Clearly never doing it would have been a far better option. wink

L16: (4) Johanna Konta WR 154 v Beatriz García-Vidagany (ESP) WR 236 or Conny Perrin (SUI) WR 281 (H2H 0-0 in both cases)
