Week 13 - Vietnam F1 $10,000 - Bac Lieu City - Hard

Looks like Josh Ward Hibbert has sneaked the final place in the MD where he will join Fitzy who looks to be seeded 6th.

L32: (5) Andrew Fitzpatrick WR 510 v Mark Fynn (ZIM) WR 1170 (CH 1116 in 2011)
L32: Josh Ward-Hibbert WR 1121 v (7) Mathias Bourgue (FRA) 644 (= CH)

Fynn is a 27-year-old who last played a Futures event in December, beating a 17-year-old with 1 point then going out in straight sets to someone ranked around 500. He beat someone ranked around 500 in November, so is likely to put up a fight, but nevertheless a better R1 draw than some Fitzy has had recently, so the seeding looks have done some good. 3rd seed Jebavy (CZE) WR 442 is the other seed in his section.

A tough one for JWH, though - Bourgue is a 18-year-old who got as high as no. 12 in juniors in 2011. He is on a 4-match losing streak, but since those matches include a Futures Final and 3-set losses to Muller and Tursunov, that doesn't mean much! He has been runner-up in 2 of his last 4 Futures and beat Josh in 3 & 2 twice in juniors last year.

The ATP don't even have this tournament on their Futures list for next week yet (which means no OoP is available online) but Dan Kiernan says they are playing their singles matches on Tuesday, doubles on Monday.

Unsurprisingly, the two Brits are playing together in the doubles:

R1:  Roy Hobbs & Austin Karosi UNR (*) vs (4) Andrew Fitzpatrick & Josh Ward-Hibbert WR 1483 (I think!)

(*) Only Hobbs has a doubles ranking (1403), so I assume (no doubt wrongly!) that makes the two unranked as a pair

You're right - in ATP doubles terms ranked + unranked = unranked. I'm surprised they don't do something like adding 2000 to the ranked player's ranking when one is ranked and one isn't, but they don't.

Ah, OK.  Thanks for enightening me.

Slightly mad start to the week - first time I looked, Fitzy & JWH were 0-4 down in the 1st set, now they've won the following 6 games to take it 6-4

(just checked bet365 which confirms that really is what happened)

I can't see anything on bet365 but strangely, Flashscores has both players down to have played their singles today, despite the tweet from Soto Tennis saying they were not playing until Tuesday. No results showing though.

Personally, I trust the "man on the ground" more than the websites.

Bob - still nothing on the ATP Challengers/Futures page for this event but Fitzy has just tweeted that he is due to play not before 11 am local (04.00 GMT) tomorrow with JWH's match following on the same court.

That was my first thought too! Still, great stuff in the other two sets. And I wasn't expecting this:

L32: Josh Ward-Hibbert WR 1121 beat (7) Mathias Bourgue (FRA) 644 (= CH) by 5-7 6-4 6-4 biggrin

Well done Fitzy.

He's got 24 points coming off this week though so needs a good point haul to avoid falling back into the mid 600s

Great to see both through. This looks a particularly weak $10K and more of our GB players should take the chance and travel out to the weker tournaments in search of ranking points.
