As expected the only British winners were Lucy and Sabrina
I know this is what the rankings say "should" have happened, and in that sense it is expected. But I'm sure all of us, and certainly all of the GB players involved will be hoping that some or all of them will be climbing the rankings at some point, and therefore we should expect some "unexpected" results from time to time. Or a strong performance; taking a set perhaps; or failing that getting to a tiebreak. Something. It didn't happen again today.
Today in the men's qualifiers Clay Crawford and Sam Hutt were not "expected" to win, but they did. They qualified for the main draw, beating higher ranked players. This sort of thing is happening week in week out on the men's side. Findel-Hawkins, Carter, Skupski and others.
Come on ladies. You CAN do it!!

I have now woken up enough to be aware that if the first two sets have been won 7-5, each player has broken the same number of times, so the total number of breaks in these 24 games is an even number.
Amended. Though I think I may have been fooled by the ITF live scoring, which seems to be up to some odd tricks again. I'm pretty sure it did show 17 breaks at the end of the 2nd set (though that's no excuse for me not realising it made no sense!) but when Grace went *4-1 up in the 3rd with a double break, it showed 11 breaks for her cf 9 for Sabrina, yet while I was editing my earlier post, it changed back to 10 v 9 and now that Sabrina has got one of the breaks back, it still shows 10 v 9!
Looking at bet365, 10 breaks v 9 is correct (so I'd better re-edit to show 16 breaks by the end of set 2 ..) but the ITF app has been getting there in a very roundabout way! LOL

GB on a shirt, Davis Cup still gleaming, 79 years of hurt, never stopped us dreaming ... 29/11/2015 that dream came true!
There's a funny moment in the middle of this very old Steve Martin video which left a big impression on me (look out for the Olympics swimming after about a minute, nothing else!)
Firstly, because its the first and only time I've ever watched anything by Steve Martin which was actually funny (the other 90% of the video are in line with his normal standards, and are therefore excruciating, so please ignore)
Secondly, because it reminds me of the sort of excuses that sportsmen often make to explain their iffy performances, and I've often used variations of this sketch to explain why I'm now so rubbish at tennis these days.
The only explanation I have for the fact there are already 25 DFs in the Bamburac/Dixon match and no aces (to accompany the 19 breaks of serve), whereas in the concurrent men's match there have been just 4 DFS and 17 aces - is that they have been allocated the court with the extremely "dense air particles".......bad luck girls, if only you'd got court 1 not court 2.
Air particles becoming even more dense on Court 2 as Grace serves 3 DFs in her last service game to go down 4-6 in the decider. 29 DFs, no aces, 21 breaks of serve for the match.
Sorry!
Well done Sabrina! A win is a win. Good luck for the next round against the world ranked 428, Melander.
