I've read a lot about de Bernardi since she was little because she's Corsican (where my wife's family hails from) and is the best prospect on the island, so gets the odd feature in local rags. However, there's never been much interest her in the French sports or tennis press and she's not really on the radar as "one to look out for". $10ks about her level for now.

Naomi should never be losing matches like this, and ought to pull through, even down in the third - if she doesn't, well gosh, I would be concerned.

[By the way Bartoli is of Corsican extraction, in case any locals are up in arms (never annoy a Corsican!), but has lived her whole life in mainland France]

I hadn't realised about Bartoli, thought the only vaguely famous people to come from Corsica were Napoléon Bonaparte and Alizée (from the sublime to ...) - it's a place I've always fancied visiting though - is it as nice as it looks?

Anyway, thank goodness Naomi won. Even though she probably shouldn't be having this much trouble with a player like this, fighting back like this (something players on a bad run don't often manage) is surely a good sign

From a set down and *1-4 (0-30) in the third, might actually be a confidence boost. Good fight, is nice to see.
Obviously a slow & frustrating process for her working through the slump, but hopefully turn a corner soon.

Steven.

Corsica is superb: great beaches and watersports; beautiful mountain, river and lakeside walks; Napoleonic and Genoan history for those interested; great food including French and local fare; friendly people (unlike Paris!).

But it is increasingly expensive to fly to [I'm booking our flights for this Summer this afternoon - thanks for the rip-off Easyjet], increasingly expensive in the Summer generally (tourism is the #1 money earner and the season is short), and you do need to watch out for insane local drivers!!!

We play tennis most days before it gets too hot - life is good!

Bartoli IS of Corsican descent, but because she doesn't have meaningful ties there, the locals get a bit sniffy about it.

Corsica is a beautiful island and excellent for water sports. However watch out for the caterpillar of the oak processionary moth. I was there when they hatched out en masse in a nearby cork oak wood, stripped the trees and then headed toward the sea. After stripping the plants in the water sports club they got all over the boats and windsurfers and then fell into the sea. You could see rafts of hundreds of them drifting out to sea. The problem lasted one day and then they were gone.
