Week 8 - ITF ($10K) - Helsingborgs, Sweden - Carpet, Indoor

Q1: Jessica REN (GBR) [q4] 1116 vs. (WC) Paulina WULCAN (SWE) UNR

Q1: Anna SMITH (GBR) UNR vs. Ella LEIVO (FIN) [q6] 1119

Wulcan: 17yo CH:UNR JWR992 never won senior itf level match

Leivo: 18yo CH:1110 (12/2012) former JWR410 first match for 18 months

Bamburac should be MD, Danielle not staying on to play here for some reason.

I was just wondering how Leivo had a world ranking having not won a match for 18 months. It turns out she did win matches last year. Perhaps Blob meant 10 months as her last main draw win was last April.

L32: Sabrina Bamburac WR 821 v (Q) Karina-Ildor Jacobsgaard DEN UNR
L32: (Q) Anna Smith UNR v (2) Amy Bowtell (IRL) WR 483

No need to introduce the Irish no. 1 to people on here, I don't think. Jacobsgaard is an odd one - now aged 33, she got to a career high of 432 way back in 2002 but only played this event last year, qualifying then reaching R2. She is effectively a retired player who coaches in Copenhagen (a short train ride plus even shorter ferry trip away) and just plays this event every year for fun. She last played Fed Cup in 2010 and lost 3 & 5 to Bally in Fed Cup back in 2005. Probably more dangerous than the UNR implies.

I know what you mean - when I saw the draw, I was tempted tweet something about Amy's apparent magnetic attraction to Brits in draws but thought I had better check first (not least because she's a follower, or was at some point) and it turns out that she doesn't actually play Brits lots more often than you'd expect for a player who plays in most of the ITFs held in the UK.

In fact, she did not play a Brit in any of her 20 ITF singles matches outside the UK in the 12 months starting from (and including) Helsingborg 2012 but has played Brits in 17 of the 31 ITF singles matches that she has played in the UK over the same period, so it is playing the majority of her matches in the UK that explains why she has played Brits in 1 in 3 of her matches overall over the last 12 months.

Anna cruising through her match 5-0 up, Jess a bit tighter 4-2, but both should really qualify.

Bowtell will be a tough opponent for Anna at this stage in her comeback. It will be a good indicator of where she is at.

I'm not sure what to make of Jess Ren these days. Certainly she has some talent and presumably is pursuing a pro career now that her schooling over? Or is she planning on joining her sister in the states in September?

Cheers for that Steven. I must admit, I actually like watching Amy play. She's got a good game, she's quite a big lass, big serve etc. I was surprised a couple of weeks ao when someone posted how young she was!

The last match I saw her in was probably the best match, standard wise, I've seen in Glasgow, when she lost to Sam Murray.

Still hope Anna stuffs her though
