RE: Week 2 - Australian Open men's qualifying 2013

QR1: James Ward WR 247 beat Boris Pashanski (SRB) WR 172 6-4 6-3

QR2: James Ward WR 247 vs Mischa Zverev (GER) WR 159 (CH 45 in June 2009)

Very solid win. Almost certainly his toughest test in qualifying coming up next with Zverev.

Dennis Kudla, the highest ranked player in James' section went out today in straight sets to the German, Reister, ranked 296. If James wins his next match, FQR opponent will be ranked below him, so draw opening up nicely. BTW, one of the listeners to the Tennis Podcast tipped Dennis Kudla to WIN the AO this year.....didn't quite work out!

Good start by both guys although I would have been disappointed with anything other than wins given the draw. The real test starts now.

Isner out of the main draw, so there will be a ll place. Does that go to the top seed out in the fqr or random draw?

A random draw amongst the 4 highest-ranked FQR losers.

Not strictly qualifying realted, but that means the Americans only have one player in the top-50 in the draw (Sam Querry)

That really is an excellent win for Jamie (even if he had beaten Viola the other time they met, over 7 years ago!)

It also takes his winning streak in AO qualies to 5

Good morning from Melbourne.

Going to be a quite hot today. Top of 36 and currently 28.

A shame I can't get to the qualifiers as I'm working. I never been and it's free. I may try and get there over the weekend if any of the guys make it.

Having just looked. It's best of 3 sets for Qualies?
