Week 48 - ITF ($75K) - Dubai, UAE - Hard

As discussed on the Toyota thread, Samantha Murray should now have a special exempt into the main draw here should she want to make the 8000 km trip.

QR1: Emily Webley-Smith WR 467 v (q7) Jasmina Tinjic (BIH) WR 302 (CH 239 in 2011)

QR2: (q3) Tara Moore WR 267 v Eva Hrdinová (CZE) WR 832 (CH 168 in 2008) or Sanjana Sudhir (IND) UNR (first time on ITF pro circuit)
QR2: Webley-Smith or Tinjic v Ani Amiraghyan (ARM) WR 471 (CH 449 in 2012) or Katarzyna Kawa (POL) WR 425 (CH 394 last month)

Steven, your FQR's are just QR2s, there is another qualifying round after that and as usual there are two qualifying seeds for each place ( that was what made me suspicious smile )

From the draw details on the ITF site, the other seed in Tara's sectioo is (q5) Irina Buryachok (UKR) and in Emily's section it is (q4) Kristina Barrois (GER)

I thought I must have made even more mistakes yesterday when I looked at the qualifying draw on ITF today.

ITF says:

Amra SADIKOVIC (SUI) [1] BYE
Fatma AL NABHANI (OMA) 6-1 6-2 Ksenia PUSHKAREVA (RUS)
Eva HRDINOVA (CZE) 6-1 6-0 Sonia DAGGOU (TUN)
Jasmina TINJIC (BIH) [8] 6-1 6-0 Sanjana SUDHIR (IND)
Cristina DINU (ROU) [2] BYE
Gabriela DABROWSKI (CAN) 6-3 7-5 Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR)
Nicole ROTTMANN (AUT) 6-7(4) 6-2 6-3 Vladimira UHLIROVA (CZE)
Alexandra ARTAMONOVA (RUS) 6-2 3-6 6-4 Irina BURYACHOK (UKR) [6]
Arina RODIONOVA (RUS) [3] BYE
Constance SIBILLE (FRA) 6-3 6-0 Nigina ABDURAIMOVA (UZB)
Eri HOZUMI (JPN) 6-3 6-4 Ekaterina YASHINA (RUS)
Kristina BARROIS (GER) [5] BYE
Tara MOORE (GBR) [4] BYE
Katarzyna KAWA (POL) 6-3 6-1 Sofia SABLJAREVIC (SRB)
Ani AMIRAGHYAN (ARM) 6-0 6-0 Virginia Eliana TICA (ROU)
Danka KOVINIC (MNE) [7] 6-3 6-2 Ekaterina PUSHKAREVA (RUS)

... yet the draw on the Dubai site, which I have saved at http://www.britishtennis.net/gbtop25f/dubai.pdf in case they are just about to change it, really does show the players in a completely different order (with Emily due to play Tinjic, who is the 7th seed rather than the 8th seed in that original version of the draw) and the Saturday OoP agrees with that version.

Since it has QR1 results on it, I assume the draw on the ITF site is correct and they realised after making the original draw that they had missed out Rodionova by mistake and did a re-draw, because Rodionova has appeared as 3rd seed, Tara has moved down to 4th seed and so on down to Dabrowski moving out of the seeds altogether.

Anyway, as you can see from the above (but now with rankings added in) ...

QR1: Emily Webley-Smith WR 467 lost to Gabriela Dabrowski (CAN) WR 312 by 3 & 5

QR2: (q4) Tara Moore WR 267 v Katarzyna Kawa (POL) WR 425 (CH 394 last month)

Yes, I can confirm Steven's sanity ( well with respect to the Dubai draw smile ) and that the qualfying draw details showing yesterday on the ITF site tied in with Steven's initial post and his saved Dubai site draw.

Sam's SE gets her a reasonable R1 draw against the 14th ranked of the 22 MD entries as of right (acceptance list position).

Kurumi Nara (JPN)

WR: 163, CH: 101 (Aug 2010), H2H: 0-0
Nara had a big week recently, making the SF at the Taipei $125K Challenger. However, Johanna beat her 5 & 2 in Q64 at USO

Nara is the Japanese #4. Having beaten Japan's 2 (Doi), but lost to their #3 (Date-Krumm) in the last week, she must have some chance, but still a tough match and the fatigue has to be a factor. Worth noting though that the other 3 SF from Toyota are also in the MD here.

Potential R2 opponenet are: last weeks victor, Voegele, or Laura's vanquished Junior Wimbledon foe, Lertcheewakarn.

Could have been a lot worse.

If Tara qualifies, the possible spots are against:

  • #1 Seed, Begu (ROU)
  • Another qualifier
  • Ons Jabeur (TUN)
  • Luksika Kumkhum (THA)

So the obvious one aside, that's not too bad either.

Finally, Sam and EWS are down to play doubles together. Their R1 opponenet will be: Palkina/Rottmann (KAZ/AUT)

Report is that Tara won 2 & 2.

NB: Just a word about the official tournament website for this event (dubaitennis.com). All 3 of my anti-virus/malware/security programs (which are top of the line, enterprise level, programs) report it as a known source for malicious attacks.

If TennisForum is correct:-

Q2: MOORE, Tara (GBR) 3 267 beat KAWA, Katarzyna (POL) 425 6-2 6-2

Q3: MOORE, Tara (GBR) 3 267 v KOVINIC, Danka (MNE) 7 291

Looking at the stats, Kawa created more break points than Tara (16 v 14) but Tara was much better at playing bps, taking 8/14 to the Pole's 3/16.

It looks a very big ask for Sam to make the Australian Open this year. She would need to reach at least the SF to stand a chance and apart from Nara she would also have to get past the 7th seed Voegele (95) and the top seed Begu (52).
