British Women's Tennis - not as healthy as WE thought

In general over these 10 players, undoubtably it is not as healthy as we predicted. But I do agree with Steven that I wouldn't say that it is in general any less healthy than we now think.

I guess Jo might have not have come out too badly if she'd been in our options. And of the top 10 excluding Jo, Emily and Anna have been replaced by Lisa and Amanda who I would say would individually again have looked better re predictions.  So we are a bit better off than if these still had been the top 10 with such falls.

I think the 5 players who have done worse against all our predictions would say themselves that they have underperformed and I would have thought only someone being pretty speculative in a negative way would have predicted lower. So while, yes, we have been in general pretty overoptimistic. I wouldn't say unreasonably so.

And there is always in these contests generally, yes, a slight element of overoptimism and certainly much more likelihood to take a punt positively rather than negatively.

Interesting that Heather and Laura have again outperformed general predictions, I believe not for the first time. I think with such players, maybe rather against the trend, there is maybe a subconscious feeling of not wanting to predict too much for them, let them take their time and not push them too far, as if they were seeing our predictions  smile

And again, as Steven suggests, while a number have not done nearly as well as we predicted, and indeed the overall depth is much less than in times past, this will be balanced in many minds ( maybe more than balanced with some ) by just how well Heather and Laura are progressing at the top end.

With Laura and Heather's late season heroics, things have mostly been looking positive at the top end of GB women's tennis lately. However, here's a slightly sobering statistic: at the start of this year, 32 members of this board predicted what the ranking of the then top-10 GB women would be tomorrow.

 - 2 (Laura & Heather) are significantly above our average prediction.
 - 3 (Samantha, Tara & Mel) are close to our average prediction (Samantha being slightly above, the others slightly below).
 - The remaining 5 (Bally, Anne, Naomi, Emily & Anna) will have a ranking significantly lower than our worst-case prediction from the 32.

Bally of course has missed the last part of the season due to injury, but was already well below the lowest prediction when she stopped playing.

Whereas for the men, injured James Ward is right on the border of the lowest prediction, and Chris Eaton who hasn't played much is way below, but those who've played a full season are well within the range of our predictions.

So are our top 10 women underperforming, or are we all over-optimistic?

I'm not sure we did think it was that healthy other than Hev and Laura (and perhaps JoKo, Samantha and Tara) and further down there's virtually no depth at all - just 17 players in the top 800 and 21 in the top 1000.

Still, most of us would rather have Hev and Laura than have twice as many players in the top 500 (or even the top 250), I guess.

There could come a time (around Jan or Feb 2013) when Steven's top 25 women's table doesn't have enough ranked players to fill it.

Yes, I know ... there are so many more Brits ranked in the ATP top 1000 than in the WTA top 1000 at the moment that I've been tempted to increase the number of men to 30 and decrease the number of women to 20. However, it has been the opposite way round in the past (though never quite this extreme either way before) so who knows what might happen in future.

There does seem to be a reluctance to travel over the last year or two compared to when I first starting watching the British girls revival. That I suspect is holding back the advance of third ranked and lower players. To maintain the depth of ranked British players I think the LTA either needs to provide more money for travel or organise more ITF tournaments in the UK. The purse for the bottom rung for women players is still $10K, a level that hasn't changed for many years. It is simply no longer economic to travel the world playing low level tournaments unless you have a large private source of funds or expectations of reaching the top 100 level in the not too distant future.

For me, the achievements of Heather and Laura more than make up for any lack of achievements relative to expectations from the other players, but it is interesting that it is only our top 2 who have done better than predicted.

Ideally we would have strength in depth as well but I think it's been a really good season overall on the women's side.

The lack of depth at the lower end of things might be something to do with the influx of British girls going into the NCAA recently. Since Sarah Borwell started doing the whole agent thing, a lot more seem to be going that route. Perhaps it's just because I read more about it though given I follow her on twitter, I don't know.

I think the 'supporting cast' are not as strong as in the previous years. Remember we've lost two top 100/150 players recently in Cav and Katie O'Brien which if they were there or thereabouts would make us look instantly better.

Georgie has also been out long term inrjured and Mel has gone off the boil.

As has been mentioned the US college route has probably taken away a lot of girls whow would be solid 200-500 playeers. The Peterzan sisters for example.

We just don't have the strength in depth of France, Germnay or whoever to cope with all these losses
