Heather ( WR 71 ) would have been next in line for a seeding spot, the 8th seed being Lucie Hradecka ( WR 69 ). So even more so a bit tough to then draw the 3rd seed.

If Heather doesn't get through at least one round here, and Anne doesn't reach the SF of her 100K + H event in China, Laura will become GB No 1 for the first but surely not last time.

Let's hope Pegula double faults a few times, otherwise I can see a couple of Golden sets in that match.

Unlucky draw for Heather - makes it tough for her to get the win she needs to defend her position as British No. 1 in an otherwise softer than average draw.

On the positive side, if she beats Barthel, Heather would have a good shot at a decent run in this tournament.

Barthel is having a very good year , 26 in the race, and that having lost in R1 of 3/4 GS. That's a hard way to get a good ranking. You'd typically expect her to have made about 300 more points from GS. In reality I think she's been playing top 20 tennis this year.
But, Jovanovski (72) beat Barthel in R1 at USO. I see no reason why Heather (71) can't repeat the task.

I do think there is a danger of Heather becoming slightly de-motivated though. There is almost a tacit, latent dismissal of Heather's achievements and future prospects inherent in the rush to anoint Laura. The attitude seems to be even if Heather makes top 20, that will be a mere shiny bauble compared to the crown jewel we have waiting?
Sure it's a selfish sport, and they're doing it for themselves first and foremost, but she may be wondering what she has to do to get the sort of attention and positivity Laura always seems to get.
To which a wag replies: Get to R4 of a GS beating two GS champions and a current top 10 player along the way...

Robyn lost 1-6 1-6, in 37 minutes.

So, not even a bagel let alone a golden set there. wink (Small mercies)

She actually took the final Pegula service game in set 1 to deuce, (without the aid of DF's oh cynic ye!) and saved 2 Match points in the final game.

As for her receiving a Qualie WC, the organisers were very short of players for a $220K, and gave 10 WC in qualifying. It might have been if you were there and had a ranking and a racquet, they welcomed you with open arms!

$265 just for turning up is not to be sniffed at by anyone, let alone a struggling tennis player smile

Barthel had a bad dip during the middle of the year, but has been playing better lately although not as good as she was at the start of the year.

Robyn will also get a ranking point which make sure she will retain a ranking for a few more months.

I don't think Heather's motivation would be affected by attention or lack of that her results get (and Heather did get a fair amount of coverage this year by virtue of winning matches at Wimbledon) - if anything she might be even more determined to hold off Laura as British No. 1 for as long as possible.

Knowing Hev as I do, I agree with Tony that Laura's performances at the US open are far more likely to make her more motivated.

Heathers singles is scheduled 6th match on the main court tomorrow.
Play starts at 16:00 UK time, so it could be about 22:00 - 00:00 here before she gets on. (Hopefully, midnight, and therefore late enough for her to be thus inspired by Andys US Open victory

)

As Marina is injured, Heather is playing doubles this week with Alicija Rosolska; they are number one seeds.
Their doubles is not until Tuesday.
