OK. So this comment has nothing to do with the tennis, but I notice that the thread title says "Alphen (Clay)" when the tournament is actually in "Alphen aan de Rijn".
I remember many years ago driving for an hour around Alphen looking for my hotel before someone pointed out to me that Alphen and Alphen aan de Rijn were two completely different towns, many kilometres apart and I was in the wrong one !!
Just a silly personal memory of mine that sprung to mind and brought a smile to my face when I saw this. Sorry to bore you all.

It is just that my friends gave me stick over it for years afterwards and it brought back a funny memory. If you are right, perhaps that fact that it is often referred to as just Alphen is something I can use as an excuse

This is where I'd really like to see 1 point for a first round Challenger qualies win and 2 points for a QR2 win (as per Futures) if it's not the FQR. Yes, in this instance, it would have been a bit silly given the ranking of Mr Smethurst's first opponent. But the same thing could easily have happened in the first round of a Futures tournament, in which case Mr Smethurst would have had a point for the win. And what if, for the sake of argument, Mr Golding had beaten Gerald Melzer. It would have been the equivalent of a late-round Futures win ... and would have given him no points at all.
