Plenty of interest here. Tara in the top 250, looking to build on Kazan, and a chance to see where EWS, Lisa & Mel are at.
3 of our girls are all in the same quarter. Tara & Lisa are scheduled to meet in R2, and the winner of that match to meet Mel in QF.
If Emily can win her R1 she would face a WC in R2, either un-ranked, or 664. So the chance for a decent run is there if she can overcome that first obstacle.
R1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 388 Vs. FUJIWARA, Rika (JPN) [8] 258 (CH 84 Aug, 2005) R1: MOORE, Tara (GBR) [5] 247 Vs. LUZHANSKA, Tetiana (USA) 282 (CH 131 Sept, 2011) R1: SOUTH, Melanie (GBR) 313 Vs. MARI, TANAKA (JPN) (Q) 517 (CH 342 May, 2008) R1: WHYBOURN, Lisa (GBR) 327 Vs. HAN, Sung-Hee (KOR) 265 (CH 256 July, 2012)

Out of interest last year Laura played some oriental tournies, and these were deemed easier than their european equivalents, does it therefore follow that at lower levels the WRs are skewed?

I think there might be a point here, but I don't have sufficient categorical evidence to back it up. I think this might also apply, to a degree, to the UK events at 10K/25K level.
If someone knows if the ITF/WTA have an API for stats and other programs, I can look in to it, as relative strengths of tournaments and the relative validity of world rankings based upon them is something that interests me. I did ask the WTA if they had an API for (non-profit) applications, even on a subscription model, but they didn't get back at all.
It's probably too big a job to do properly from scratch without having access to the data in electronic form as a starting point.
Oh dear! A week that promised to be interesting and potentially fruitful has turned into a bit of a disaster - and I don't mean the earthquake the girls experienced!
Only Lisa wins an MD match. Tara's good form from Kazan, after a promising start, comes to an abrupt end; Emily couldn't open up a favourable draw that awaited, and Mel, well...
R1: MOORE, Tara (GBR) [5] 247 lost to LUZHANSKA, Tetiana (USA) 282 6-4 5-7 0-6 R1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 388 lost to FUJIWARA, Rika (JPN) [8] 258 4-6 6(5)-7 R1: SOUTH, Melanie (GBR) 313 lost to MARI, TANAKA (JPN) (Q) 517 1-6 4-6
Mel lost to a qualifier too, so 0/3 today Emily was a break down halfway through the 2nd set, broke back, got broken again, broke back again, got broken again, and then broke back yet again to get into the tiebreak, in which she was a mini-break up more than once.
The results in the last post still had last week's rankings (and two sets the wrong way round, unless they were taken from another source and the Japanese site is wrong), so here is a full recap.
L32: Emily Webley-Smith WR 388 lost to (8) Rika Fujiwara (JPN) WR 259 by 6-4 7-6(5) L32: (5) Tara Moore WR 248 lost to Tetiana Luzhanska (USA) WR 281 by 7-5 4-6 6-0 L32: Lisa Whybourn WR 326 beat Han Sung-Hee (KOR) WR 265 by 3 & 3 L32: Melanie South WR 311 lost to (Q) Mari Tanaka (JPN) WR 485 by 1 & 4
L16: Lisa Whybourn WR 326 v Tetiana Luzhanska (USA) WR 281 (CH 131 last Sep)
H2H 0-1, Rancho Santa Fe 25K, Feb 2011, 3 & 5.

I think I got them from the same place (http://www.sekisho.co.jp/tennis/result.htm) but, I refreshed the page, and the result for Tara was then as you indicated, with the first two sets switched around.

Interesting. I guess we can hold out a very faint hope that some of the scores may be completely wrong then!

So many sites seem to get the British scores wrong. They insist on pretending that our players actually lose matches, when we all know that's not true.
