Week 28 - WTA Premier ($740K) - Stanford, USA Hard

R1: WATSON. Heather (GBR) 103 v STEPHENS, Sloane (USA) 59

R1: KEOTHAVONG, Anne (GBR) 77 v BURDETTE, Mallory (USA) WC UNR

If Anne gets through she plays Bartoli 2 in R2.

Heather probably plays Wickmayer 5 in R2.

Shouldn't the 'if' be on the other match?

Probably, however on the two occasions when Heather played Sloane she did end as the winner.

Sloane Stephens has had a number of really impressive looking results in the last few months on clay, helping improve that official ranking and her race ranking of 44 going into Wimbledon ( Heather race ranking 73 ).

Also impressive looking scores at Wimbledon, R1 beating Karolina Pliskova in 2 sets, R2 beating Cetkovska ( seed 23 ) in 3 sets and in R3 losing to that noted Wimbledon performer Lisicki ( seed 15 ) in 3 sets.

I wasn't that impressed when I saw her losing to Bally at the French Open last year, but she is now clearly a girl very much on the up, and I would think likely to be a tough test for Heather.  As some folk will know, the two are big pals.

I did have a smile at the "if" positioning in the original post.  Poor Anne  smile

I suspect Sloane will probably get her revenge here, playing in front of a home crowd. Also she was out of form when she lost that match in Estoril. Hopefully though there is something in the matchup which will allow another upset result.
Huge points on offer this week and big opportunities given the weak field. Annie has a dream draw and should make it into R2 without too much difficulty.

Heather against Sloane certainly an interesting match, which hopefully will be on a stream somewhere (and not in the middle of the night). Both impressed at Wimbledon but Sloane does start as favourite with home advantage.

Anne should have 60 points in the bag after that draw, which should help her keep hold of the British No.1 spot for a while.

Heather v Sloane is the feature match on Monday night ... sadly at 3 am BST!

Well, they're not going to play it anywhere else ;)

Anne also won her first round doubles.

The match was described as 'Messy McMess' by one American tweeter, but who cares if Hev 'won ugly' as long as she won
