Week 21 - Roland Garros men's qualifying

QR1: (q29) James Ward WR 141 v Denis Kudla (USA) WR 178 (CH 168 in April)

Other seed in section: (2) Bachinger

QR1: Josh Goodall WR 228 v Hiroki Moriya (JPN) WR 219 (CH 216 in April)

Seeds in this section: (17) Sijsling and (7) Gil

QR1: Jamie Baker WR 206 v Peter Torebko (GER) WR 203 (CH 195 in April)

Seeds in this section: (21) Muñoz de la Nava & (14) del Bonis

All first meetings. It's never going to be easy for Brits at RG, but those draws could have been a lot worse! Having said that, all of their R1 opponents hit career highs last month, so (without having dig any deeper yet) they are probably all in decent form.

Couldnt have asked for better draws in my opinion

I think Goodall will struggle as he depends a lot on dictating with his serve and 2nd shot which will be more difficult here

Ward has the most experience on the clay out of the brits so i'd like to back him to take it

Torebko has a big game so probably less suited to a more consistent baseliner in Baker

am i right in thinking itv has rights to show coverage of the french open this year. does this include qualies? looking forward to adverts at every change of end!

Yep - see here, but while the qualies are important to regular posters on here when there's a Brit involved, given the limited number of hours which will be broadcast each day, I can't see ITV being @rsed about something as insignificant (in the eyes of the uninitiated) as matches preceding "the main event".  The Beeb doesn't cover Wimbledon qualies, so why should ITV, with a far less ambitious project at R-G, waste precious time on what is, let's face it, basically the warm-ups?

Maybe because ITV have 4 channels, but I suspect qualies will not even have the cameras in place

So has the Beeb, but I agree that it's unlikely that there will be cameras in place that early.

Roland Garros website seems to have gone downhill massively this year.

Sure I remember last year they did the qualies draw "live" on the IBM Tracker part of the website so you could see the names being placed. No such luck at 5pm yesterday.

Also the Live Scores section of the RG website seems to have no current matches to display. If this isn't the fault of my browser then tsk tsk to Roland Garros.

Don't really like the looks of Ward and Goodall's draws, but wish the best for all of them.

Aha - the scoreboard that refreshes automatically has now sprung serving indicators!

 excellent - well spotted!

although the other one is still several points ahead if you can keep refreshing quickly enough!
