Week 21 - ITF ($25K) - Karuizawa, Japan - Artificial Grass

L32: (8) Tara Moore WR 335 v Mari Tanaka (JPN) WR 541 (CH 343 in 2008)
L32: Samantha Murray WR 357 v (5) Aiko Nakamura WR 239 (CH 47 in 2007)
L32: (6) Mel South WR 273 v Emily Webley-Smith WR 403

So Emily gets another Brit in R1 for the 2nd week running! Mel leads the ITF H2H between them 2-0, though their last meeting was in 2008. Tara lost to Tanaka in straight sets in Fukuoka in 2009.

Thanks - amended. I couldn't work out how I'd managed to mistype 239 as 128 until I realised all 3 digits are one to the left of the correct ones! ashamed

Good luck girls. Typical that Mel plays Em.

Have to say hope Mel wins, she seems to be on an upward curve and this could see her step on again.

Em has been struggling for a while, her time will come.

Great stuff girls after what has been a poor tour overall except for the start of Mels comeback?

On paper all three should win their 2nd rounds but who knows these days

Hopefully Mel can win a couple more matches here and close in on a top 250 spot for a Wimbledon wild card. It has to be her main target with Wimbledon only a month away.

That's 56 points for Mel in Japan so far this month, which after allowing for points coming off should take her into the mid-260s at the end of RG (with hopefully more to add in the next couple of weeks) - she would need about 30 more points to get into the top 250.

Oh dear, I'm having an existential moment ...

For pity's sake, what is the point of all this? Travelling to Japan at astounding cost to one's wallet and well-being, targeting weak tournaments to try to scrape one's way into the top 250 to get .... a Wimbledon wild card.

Sorry, moment over ... love of the game, and all that ...

COME ON GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

smile
