    Another bad loss for Nicola, who has only picked up 2 ranking points so far this year - having said that, 2 points is more than the next 4 highest-ranked Brits (Eleanor Dean 0, Nic Slater 0, Katie - who has a very good excuse - and Jennifer Allan 1) have managed since the start of 2012.

    R1: SLATER, Nicola (GBR) 755 v AUSTIN, Brooke (USA) WR 873 (CH 838 last Nov)

    Austin was the top seed in qualifying, is just 16 and was a top 100 junior last year, so is probably the worst of the qualifiers to get. However, she did only just scrape through her first qualifying match 7-6(5) in the 3rd against an unranked Venezuelan.

Nik not happy with her young opponent ...

"16yr olds who can't or refuse to say please and thank you and have manners on a court will never cease to amaze me. "come on" at a double fault at 1-1 and 0-0 is also very respectful."

... but all's well that ends well: "Won 6-3 4-6 6-3 after being 5-1 40-0 down in 2nd too. singles and dubs tomorrow!"

Moore was ranked as high as 132 in 2008 when she was just 18, a year when she also became the youngest Aussie to win a main draw match at the AO this century and reached the AO girls' Final.
