Week 13 - Challenger ($100,000+H) - Le Gosier, Guadeloupe (hard)

The good news: Evo is 2nd seed in qualifying and Alex is 5th, i.e. the best of the lower seeds.

The bad news: I'll give you 3 guesses (*) - though 1 will be more than enough ...

QR2: (q2) Dan Evans WR 291 v Darian King (BAR) WR 753 (CH 700 last Nov) or Andreas Siljeström (SWE) UNR (CH 964 in 2010, current DWR 65)
QR2: (q5) Alex Ward WR 341 v (wc) Calvin Hémery (FRA) UNR or (wc) Marcel-Ioan Miron (ROU) UNR (CH 697 in 2006, H2H 0-1, 3&2 BEL F2 2009)

(*) The winners play each other in the FQR.

Hémery has no senior record on ITF but I thought I recognised his name - turns out Jonny O'Mara beat him in the Sarawak Cup Final last year - http://www.arbroathherald.co.uk/sport/local-sport/jonny_wins_yet_another_title_in_malaysia_1_1933688

LOL yes, that might well pass the youngest members of the forum by. My first memory of seeing sport on TV is watching the first day of the athletics at the Munich Olympics when David Hemery was running in the heats of the 400m hurdles trying to defend his title. He eventually won the bronze medal, with Akii-Bua (now there's an athlete who had a story to tell!) winning the gold medal. The new Hémery has just lost the 1st set in a tiebreak but King has beaten the doubles specialist, so:

Evo has to save 3 breaks points in the 9th game but eventually serves it out to take the set 6-3

GSM 6-3, 6-4

On paper a solid albeit unspectacular win.

Well at least one of them will get the 5 points for qualifying. After that things look pretty tricky as the qualifier spots don't look very friendly. Possibilities are

Lu (WR 59)
Mahut (WR 92)
Ito (WR 94)
Clement (WR 153)
