Mel had a big 2-6 6-4 6-4 win against Nakamura in R3 at Birmingham WTA in 2008, less than a year after the Japanese player had reached her career high of 47. It took Mel into her one and only WTA QF and was instrumental in her career high being in 2 figures rather than 3!

However, Nakamura thrashed her 0 & 2 when they met in a 50K in Clearwater less than a year later.

Zec-Peskiric has been a top 100 player too (CH 93 in 2009) and Emily has met her once before, losing in 3 sets 4-6 7-5 6-3 at a 50K in Delhi.

Anna and Emily play tonight.

I find it a little ironic that if our girls had been at home in Costa Del Sunderland they would have encountered a much easier field this week.

Jees, do we always have to speculate that something might be 'up' with the other player just cos someone's doing well?

If you're referringto my comment, it was meant (as with Georgia Craven's double bagel in Sunderland) in the sense that even if the scoreline suggests the opponent may not be firing on all cylinders, it's a really impressive performance. No negativity meant at all!

Hmm,  not sure you've quite dug yourself out yet  smile

Just perhaps it's basically Mel playing really well, It's not as if she hasn't been a top 100 player in her time so we know the capability is there.

Anyway, on the face of it, a good looking performance so far.

C'mon, Mel.

Mel's match against Nakamura is about to start and is being live scored on bet365. I'll check back once in a while, but thought I'd mention it in case anyone missing late night tennis from down under feels like taking a closer look!

Having half-expected the score to end up closer to the 0 & 2 drubbing than to the Birmingham win, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Mel started by taking Nakamura to deuce in her first service game then held to love and has now broken to 30

Whatever may or may not be up with Nakamura, that was an amazing 1st set from Mel - she dropped just 3 points on serve in 4 games!

Looking good at the moment, the Japanese girl hasn't played since November, so hopefully won't knock the rust off in time to make a comeback.
