QR1: Jamie Baker WR 241 v (q3) Izak van der Merwe (RSA) WR 113 (=CH)

Jamie has beaten van der Merwe once before, edging him out 7-5 in the 3rd in Joplin way back in 2005, but the South African got his revenge this year, winning 6 & 4 in Charlottesville a couple of months ago.

Jamie spent last two weeks with Andy Murray in Miami training.  Jamie said it was the two best weeks he's ever had training.  Jamie said Andy's footwork and shotmaking is out of this world.  Baker boy likes where his game is after the two weeks and has high hopes for 2012.  Hope everyone has a great New Year!

Thanks, happy New Year to you too! Sounds like Jamie could be pretty confident going into this match, though he's been unlucky in the sense of being the only one of four Brits drawn into 2012 events so far who hasn't got a wild card in his/her first match!

Jamie gets 2 break back points but the South African saves them both ... then Jamie gets another but van der Merwe saves that too and wins the game, leaving Jamie serving to stay in the match.

Sad news from Jamie:

"Tough match in chennai yesterday. Had my chances but just couldn't convert. Unfortunately I have a lingering injury and even after much hard Work the injury has returned. I will be forced to withdraw from the Australian open. At this point it is unknown how long I will be out for"
