Week 43 - ITF ($25K) - Port Pirie, Australia - Hard

R1: Alison BAI (AUS) WR 614 Vs Samantha MURRAY (GBR) WR 465
R1: Lisa WHYBOURN (GBR) WR 401 Vs Lena LITVAK (USA) WR 351
R1: Melanie SOUTH (GBR) (8) WR 311 Vs (wc) Rachael TREDOUX (AUS) WR 995
R1: Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) (6) WR 251Vs Q

A wc or q awaits EWS in R2 too so a chance for some decent points.

After beating Mel and Sam in recent weeks, Litvak now gets to play Lisa. Both have taken a set off her but can Lisa go a step further?

Litvak has won 3-setters against Brits (Mel twice and Sam) in R1 of the last three 25Ks, so that's a streak that could do with being ended!

Litvak also beat Mel last week (in the final) in an AMT event, also in 3 sets.

However, Mel and Emily teamed up to win the doubles in that same event.

As a side note, the boys also played with Toby and Richard winning the doubles and Toby beating Richard in the singles final.

Mixed news from TennisForum:

R1: Samantha MURRAY (GBR) WR 465 defeated Alison BAI (AUS) WR 614 6-2 6-4
R1: Lisa WHYBOURN (GBR) WR 401 Vs Lena LITVAK (USA) WR 351
R1: Melanie SOUTH (GBR) (8) WR 311 lost to (wc) Rachael TREDOUX (AUS) WR 995 6-4 7-5
R1: Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) (6) WR 251Vs Q

I'm really worried Mel will join Katie in retirment if her results don't pick up.

Wow, woeful loss for Mel there, just as she was beginning to pick up a couple of points again. Looks like she might need to try something radically different to start picking up points again.

Great to see Lisa end Litvak's R1 Brit-bashing streak - 3 Brits in R2 (not to mention the two GB men here making it through too) is a bit of novelty on this year's Aussie 25K swing.

L16: Samantha Murray WR 464 v (1) Erika Sema (JPN) WR 127
L16: Lisa Whybourn WR 398 v (3) Olivia Rogowska (AUS) WR 191 (CH 138 in 2009)
L16: (6) Emily Webley-Smith WR 246 v (Q) Emelyn Starr (AUS) WR 870

Starr was top 400 in 2009. She beat Emily in Mildura in 2008 but Emily got her revenge in Burnie at the start of this year. Both times, the winner came back from a set down.

What a pity - I quickly checked again to make sure it wasn't just another howler from me, but no, @oztennisresults still has:

"R32 Lisa Whybourn (GBR) d Lena Litvak (USA) 6-2 1-6 6-4 Nyrstar Port Pirie Tennis International #protour"

Well Done Em and Sam

Who knows what happened with Lisa.

Terrible loss for Mel. What has happened to her?
