Week 41 - WTA ($220K) Osaka, Japan - Hard

QR1: (q2) Laura Robson WR 141 v Hsieh Su-Wei TPE WR 194 (CH 78 in 2008)

4th on court on Saturday, so probably not before 07.00 BST.

Mlad the Impaler is the other seed in Laura's section.

In fact, at a quick glance, you could be forgiven for thinking the draw is from a junior slam last year, with (2) Laura, (4) Lertcheewakarn, (6) Mladenovic and (7)/(8) the Pliskova twins all seeded in qualifying here! Nice to see that Laura is currently the highest ranked of all of those five players.

A shame Laura couldn't quite sneak into the main draw as a direct acceptance - hopefully she can qualify as she did here last year.

Very tough draw, Hsieh recently won a 75k and in her last match lost a tough 3 setter to Scheepers. Easy second round match and then another tough FQR potential matchup against Shvedova/Mlad.
Laura's had a great run of draws, so cannot complain too much.

If she's fit, which I hope she is, then this draw is a very good test for her.

At least she can gain some points in the qualifying rounds.  It's not like mens' futures qualifying where you can win as many as four matches and get no points.

Yes, there's definitely more incentive for women to play qualifiers a level above their normal level than there is for the men. Even in Challengers, you usually have to win 3 matches to get any (3-5) points.

I actually prefer to see Laura compete in the main tour events, even if she has to qualify and so points are a bit harder to come by than playing in an ITF event. A tough draw this time, but she has beaten better players a few times recently so if she plays well she has a good chance of qualifying.

Hsieh's ranking of 194 comes from only 10 events so she would probably be close to the top 100 if she had played a full season.

She's defending qualifying points from last year, so won't gain anything, but I agree with your general point.

Well, whatever points Laura earns in qualifying and hopefully the main draw will count on top of what points she would otherwise have had after Osaka  smile

Ha Ha.  Sorry if both RBBOT and my arguable pernicketiness only helps to obscure.

Position is :

a)  Laura will have 486 points in this coming Monday's rankings.

b)  For the rankings the following week, the 16 points she earned for qualifying for the main draw in Osaka last year will come off that ranking points total

c)  For these rankings, all points she earns in Osaka this coming week will go on.

So, it's basically, points a week on Monday   =   a)  -  b)  +  c)

I'll leave folk to decide themselves what words they use to describe that and shut up  smile
