Week 29 Futures - Belgium F4 ($10k) - Middelkerke (Hard)

This tournament, just a few km down the coast from where the ferries to Oostende arrive, is beginning to look like the main alternative to Dublin for those not staying in the UK to play County Cup next week.

James Marsalek is a DA and judging by the qualifying draw, Joshua Jones has scraped in too, but the big 'surprise' is Alex Ward turning up as a late entrant in qualifying. It looks like quite a clever move, assuming he decided to play here after seeing the entry list - if he does qualify, he is likely to be seeded 3 behind Coco and Folie.

All players GBR and/or unranked unless otherwise stated:

QR1: Marc Beckles lost to Louis Cant (BEL) by 4 & 1
QR1: Dominic Ross-Hurst beat Nikola Bismpikos (GRE) by 1 & 2

QR2: (q1) Alex Ward WR 496 v Jesse Kalambay (SUI)
QR2: (q9) Jamie Whiteford WR 1471 v Sander Gille (BEL)
QR2: (q3) Ashley Hewitt WR 1277 v Bobbie de Goeijen (NED)
QR2: Dominic Ross-Hurst v (q6) Marco Dierckx (BEL) WR 1399

Let's just hope he manages to wage it in the qualies, eh, Steven? wink

Are you suggesting that last result was not a Boltz from the blue? (Sorry)

Not in the least, but I rather think it was for his "compatriot", the seventh seed, Gleb Sakharov (WR 562), whom he beat today by 7-6(4) 6-3! wink

James Marsalek has just tweeted that he beat 8th seed Daescu in 3 hours - he plays (Q) Meuffels (NED) WR 1177 in R2, who took 3 sets to beat another player ranked outside the top 1000 in R1, so it looks like that was a R1 match particularly well worth winning for James!

Well done, that lad! biggrin    Sounds as though they could both be equally knackered, come the start of their second-round match, though! wink

Unfortunately, Meuffels won his R1 match yesterday so will have had a whole day's rest. Pretty clear from their results that James is the better player though.

Marsalek and Hewitt lost in the doubles according to a tweet from James. Said he was too tired to play his best.
