Week 25 Challengers - Guadalajara ($100K) - Mexico - Hard

Jamie has about as nice a draw as you could hope for in a 100K!

L32: Jamie Baker WR 377 v (WC) Julio Cesar Vazquez (MEX) UNR

Vazquez is not listed as having player any junior or senior matches on ITF, so I think it is a mis-spelling on the drawsheet for Vasquez, which would make Jamie's opponent an 18-year-old ranked just outside the top 500 in juniors.

The winner plays 8th seed Klec WR 240 (CH 184 in 2006), who is currently on a 6-match losing streak, or another WC.

It appears a draw from the Gods on paper, will reality be different?

After the disappointment of not qualifying for wimbledon glad to see Jamie has gone back abroad to escape the "circus" of Wimbledon and the normal negative press on the state of British tennis. Let us hope he picks back up gets back into top 300 as a first goal.

Naughty, naughty. Baker takes the 1st set 6-0, winning 26 points of the 34 and 100% of 1st serves points (11)

He won in 53 minutes with just 19 points lost

L16: Jamie Baker WR 371 v (8) Ivo Klec (SVK) WR 238 (CH 184 in 2006)

Jamie already has 8 ranking points to replace his WC out in R1 zero-pointer from Wimbledon last year (and 16 more if you count the Wimbledon qr2 points too), if only just over 10% of the prize money. Still, it's a 100K so $1720 for beating an unranked WC isn't too bad!

Jamie:

"Very good draw for me here. 60, 61 victory against a local club player. Pretty uneventful match....you would think......

With the score 6-0, me about to serve to start second set, I see a mini tornado in the trees behind the court. Then I see it coming my way

This thing swept onto the court, picking up benches, chairs and the umpire seat 15 feet in the air. Never seen anything like it

Luckily no one was hurt. I could not believe the power of this thing. Certainly got a perspective now on how much damage is caused."

Scary!

Is that in response to the tornado or a British player winning 0 and 1 wink

Am a little reluctant to post this for fear of jinxing Jamie's chances of reaching the QF & bagging 18 points, but I'm not sure how much longer I can stay away from my bed!  Anyway, he's just taken the first set by 6-3... smile

Blimey!  Three consecutive service breaks at the beginning of the second set, then a hold for Jamie B: 3-1*...

Yes!  Jamie B breaks Klec to take the second set by the same score, 6-3, & go through to the quarter-final! biggrin

QF:  Jamie Baker WR 371 vs Jan Mertl (CZE) WR 295 (*)

(*)  Mertl took out the third seed, Bobby Reynolds, in straight sets in the first round...!

Great stuff Jamie. 18 points in the bag is a good reward.
