Week 40 - Futures F5 ($15K) - Espinho, Portugal - Clay

Dan Smethurst is a very, very late w/d again. cry.gif

L32: Alex Slabinsky WR 500 v (JE) Jason Kubler (AUS) WR 622
L32: Alex Ward WR 521 v (WC) Vasco Mensurado (POR) UNR

Kubler is the former world junior no. 1 who lost to Oliver Golding in Wimbledon juniors. Slabba is the only Brit down to play singles on Monday.

Mensurado is 16 years old and 0-4 (yet to win a set) against ranked players.

And that completes a nightmare day on the Iberian peninsula - the Wardinator must be glad he isn't due to start until tomorrow!

Oh dear  cry

Interesting to see what mark Kubler is beginning to make in seniors with a futures final and 2 semis.

Be more interesting though to see how quickly Oli can move up the rankings once he hopefully begins to make a real go of seniors next year.

That is good for Alex Ward as he hasn't won back to back matches since July. Indeed he has been very quiet since that QF run at the Nottingham Challenger. Hopefully a return to form

Yes, I thought his first half of the year very encouraging.  Seemed to go into a bit of a drout not long after he was backup to the Davis Cup team  hmm.gif

Would be good to see him start to pick up some good points again.

And an even better win for the Wardinator and into first semi since March

QF: Alex Ward WR 521 def (2) Marcel Zimmermann (GER) WR 366 6-3 7-6
SF: Alex Ward WR 521 v (8) Marc Sieber (GER) WR 511

Can he get his 3rd seeded scalp in a row?

A really good week for Alex smile.gif - he's played Sieber twice before, losing 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 to him in Melilla (Spain) in 2008 and 7-6(3) 7-6(5) to him in Dubrovnik (CRO) in 2009, so hoping for 3rd time lucky!

This is unexpected from Alex. He seems to have raised his game again. If he can consistently put in these sort of performances, he will have a good future in the game.
