Week 26 Futures - Norway F2 ($15k) - Gausdal (hard)

L32: Alex Ward WR 532 v (Q) Matthias Wolf (ITA) WR 1258
L32: Dan Cox WR 545 v (Q) Pierre Bonfre (SWE) UNR

Pretty good R1 draws (if odd that they're both playing opponents whose names make them sound like they come from a different country!), but top seed Igor Sijsling WR 154 is likely to await the winner of Alex's match in R2.

Wolf beat James Feaver in Egypt earlier this year, but Dan Cox beat him on his way to the title here last year.

18-year-old Bonfre lost in qualifying last week and the match he won to qualify here against a fellow unranked 18-year-old was his first win on the senior tour - he does not have a junior record on ITF either.

Cox def. Bonfre - 6-1, 6-2.

He had to take advantage of what was a very nice first round draw and got an easy win to help recover one of the points he has been defending over the last few weeks.

Takes on 6th seed Harri Heliovaara in the next round who is at a career high of 372. A match that Cox at his best can win, but he'll probably have to play at his best.

Norway F2/Gausdal 2 is actually the title he's defending.

Looks like the rain/snow fell in Norway today as Ward's match didn't get completed.

He leads 7-5, 1-2 (40-40) though.

And if he is to come through, instead of facing the top seed, he will face Carl Bergman, who dispatched the top seed Igor Sisjling 6-0, 6-1!!!

My tweet said: "That means Alex won 5 of the last 6 games smile.gif RT @AlexWard1990: finished off indoors...5 and 3 :) been raining for last 24 hours!"

Maybe the last 6 games bit confused people? Alex tweeted it himself, so I assumed it was correct! smile.gif

Mixed news from Norway.

Alex Ward def. Carl Bergman - 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Harri Heliovaara def. Dan Cox - 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Ward now faces 8th seed Fabrice Martin in the quarter finals.

Good win for Ward against an opponent who is obviously in some form, but a shame for Cox to lose and his ranking is definately going to tumble now.

Yes, down over 250 to about WR 800 and down from GB 13 to GB 23. It's amazing how few points he's picked up in the last 51 weeks - the Gausdal win made up about 70% of his total. cry.gif
