Not good draws for either of them...with benefit of hindsight should perhaps have opted for a Challenger this week.

i mentioned this to alex before. he basicaly said he can play challengers any time in a year but a slam is a slam. he doesnt dream of playing challengers all his career.

Yes, pretty tough.

I do very much agree with Boggo's thinking though.  I think if you are good enough to make qualifying for a Grand Slam you should generally play.  Grand Slams are surely the ultimate of what tennis is all about.  In the case of the French Open, maybe especially I'd say the case for James, given he has shown abilities on clay, but really for anyone that qualifies.

I can appreciate pragmatism re points etc the rest of the year, but yes "a slam is a slam" and the ultimate in tennis.

QR1 matches with rankings:

QR1: Alex Bogdanovic WR 161 v Conor Niland (IRL) WR 169

Belgrade-born Boggo faces Birmingham-born Niland LOL - these two have never played before but Niland is on a 5-match winning streak after winning the Ramat Hasharon Challenger and he won a Futures event on green clay in Florida last year.

This is an evil section, headed by former world no. 25 Volandri and with serial Boggo-basher de Chaunac lurking as well. cry.gif

Can Boggo keep up his RG qr1 winning streak?

QR1: James Ward WR 356 v (q29) Pablo Andujar (ESP) WR 148

Not a bad section otherwise, since the top seed (*) has been promoted to the main draw and the no. 33 seed has taken his place. For that to have any relevance though, Wardy will have to get past Andujar, who tonked him 0 & 2 in Lleida qualifying back in 2005.

(*) though that was Ginepri, beaten by Boggo last week, so it might have been better to have him there after all - since he's American, that may mean he pulled out at the last minute instead of getting promoted to the MD!

Its gonna be tough for Boggo to keep up his 1st round FO qualie winning streak.
However, if he does manage to beat Niland, I'm confident he'll continue his 2nd round losing streak against Volandri!

As much as I would like to see Alex qualify I can't see him getting past Volandri.

Boggo should be starting soon as the match before has just finished.
