Q1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 474 lost to ORLIK, Anna (BLR) 601 by 6-2 4-6 6-3
Looks like Emily did her best to turn things around but to no avail, a sad early end to her campaign here after a good week in Gimhae.
Mel is seeded 5 and seems to have a relatively decent draw - she will play a Q/LL in R1, with the winner to play Viratprasert WR 298 or a Q/LL in R2 and the other seed in the quarter being the lowest one she could have got, (4) Namigata WR 187.

Hopefully Em has entered the doubles so can pick up a few dollars from her time in Changwon. Next week she is a DA into the Gimcheon draw, as a lot of players (Mel included) are heading onto Japan for the series of 50Ks, so hopefully Em can benefit from the diluted draw and get some wins and points.
Cmon Mel, time to turn your troubles around and build some confidence before the grass. I feel her chances of WCs into grass events are difficult enough even without Laura and Heather being thrown into the mix and it would really hurt her rank if she only defends a fraction of her grass court points.
R2: Chun-Mei JI (CHN) WR 370 Vs Melanie SOUTH (GBR) (5) WR 238
Ji came through qualifying and won her first round thanks to an early retirement from her opponent. She beat Tara in January, but hopefully won't have enough to beat Mel.
If Mel can beat Ji, she'll face another qualifier in the QF. Either the WR 344 or WR 399, so a chance for her to pick up some useful points.

I had been thinking bit of a struggle but at least a win for Mel.
I didn't realise quite what a struggle and comeback and all credit to her. Things may not have been going well, but certainly no sense of throwing in the towel there ! That's no doubt not her, but on the run that she's had, with conditions apparently difficult, well behind and facing match points, some would not have been so gutsy.
Hopefully Mel will get a few more matches here and that just being on court winning matches will start to turn things round for her.
