Whichever way you want to look at this that is a shocking result for Georgie. Being a big fan of Georgie's I hesitate to say this but you cannot defend this performance. 1/. Georgie was back on a hard court after promising performances on clay. 2/. She was playing a girl who eventhough has a career high of 178 was in nowhere near that form qualifying for this event. 3/. And even if you assume Lee was somehow back to her best as a top150/200 player as we know Georgie is that was a shocking scoreline.
Jo seems to be returning to near her best form but alas without any ranking points reward. Glatch was probably vulnerable today it being her 1st match of 2010 so a shame she couldn't pull off the big upset . Jo had such a torrid last six months of last year that now she is playing catchup and unfortunately is likely to drop down the rankings before hopefully moving back up. But if she can keep up this consistency she should be aiming for a top 250 ranking by the end of the year. It must be extremely difficult that she is not eligible for wild cards at the moment given her wish to compete for GB. Last year of course GB did give her a wild card for Sutton and she responded with a final spot.
Any win for Mel at the moment should be celebrated and hopefully she can bulid on this. Reading her tweets you can reaaly tell the lack of confidence she has at the moment. So I don't see any dramatic return to her best form yet but hopefully slowly she can get there.
Yes, there certainly seem some quite good signs from Jo at the start of this year.
But as Phil says no real reward rankingwise and now as she adds 1 point here she is going to lose her 34 from last year's Sutton final and drop about 100 places into the mid 400s.
After that she will only have one point to defend until last June's El Paso QF ( 14 pts ) and Waterloo title ( 50 pts ), which represent the huge bulk of her remaining points.
Actually if you look at Jo's scores over the last 6 months of last year, I don't think her performances as a whole seemed really that bad. She lost successive 3 setters to players ranked in 600s to 900s, but then from September on prior to her final match ( a straight sets loss to WR 1011 ) her losses were to ranks 374, 270, 341, 370 and 222 and she seemed pretty competitive, 3 of these going to 3 sets. Her only wins in this period were a 4 - 1 ret against WR 334 and a 3 set win against WR 432.
It was more she was coming up frustratingly short, couldn't really buy many wins and particularly turn 3 setters into wins, so got very little in ranking points.
It's a tricky one in that I would think she had the form to have picked up quite a lot of points in 10Ks ( even with their relative poor reward ), but quite rightly really, particularly with her earlier successes, was concentrating on 25K and 50K qualifying, but just couldn't dig out the results.
