The Next Generation

As most of our top players have hung up their tennis trainers for the season I thought I would look at the prospects for our up and coming players for 2010.
It is probably fair to say that the six players listed below are the most talented crop of younger players we have had for a generation.
I feel a realistic target for all of these players is a top 300 ranking by the end of next year bar injuries.
In no particular order the players are Naomi Broady, Heather , Laura , Joss , Lisa and Tara.

Naomi : Next year with a full schedule and on the form of her recent win she should be looking at a top 200 ranking. No obvious weaknesses and generally a very consistent performer. To get a ranking above 200 she will need to believe in herself a bit more. This year against much higher ranked players she missed opportunities due probably to this lack of belief. Unlike Laura and Heather she cannot use her achievements at junior level to give her that belief at this time but will need to gain it over time.

Heather: I suspect that Heather will become a very consistent performer in years to come. She has no major weaknesses but will be undone by aggressive players who are on their A game. I also feel she hasn't matured completely yet evidenced by her wish to continue to want to play big junior events in her final junior year. So eventhough I expect her to get a top 100 senior ranking eventually next year I see solid but not spectacular progress up the rankings and expect her to be top 300 before making a major surge in 2011.

Laura: Her rankings rise next year will again be impeded by the number of tournaments she can play. Again don't expect a dramatic rise up the rankings because of this. Much will depend on wild card entries into grand slams and whether she can gain a few big ranking point wins in those. Not yet ready to make a huge step forward I see her as top 300 by the end of next year.

Joss: Much will depend on her injury status during 2010 but assuming she is 100% a top 300 ranking is achievable. For 2011 and beyond much will depend on whether she can improve her movement and especially her backhand.

Lisa: The surprise package of 2009 so in 2010 she will be out to prove that the backend of this year was no flash in the pan. First half of the year should be used to consolidate those gains thus giving her a platform to make a further surge in the second half of the year. Her form outdoors will be key as she has a major preference for playing indoors. Don't expect to see her on a claycourt but she certainly has a liking for grass. Top 300 by the end of next year is well within her capability.

Tara: An outside bet for top 300. A very talented player but also very inconsistent. I have no particular insight into her game other than she really loves the grass. Improvements will have to be made to her game but given that last year she was better than Heather she should now be ready to take that step forward.

If Lisa can develop a forehand to match or come close to her backhand she will be a very impressive performer indeed - tho it does make me happy that two of our most promising up and comers (Lisa and Naomi B) are impressive for their backhands rather than their forehands!

Great analysis of the players and I agree with it.

I believe Taras lack of progression this year has been down to niggling injuries and inconsistancy. She'll always be a streaky player but its whether she can have more ups than downs.

thanks for the read.
my only concern with joss and naomi, like all tall girls, is their movement. On hard surfaces they seem to be fine. But i think may struggle on others.

Thanks Phil, that was interesting reading.

Do you or anyone else have any thoughts about Jade Curtis's future progress ?

She does often seem an overlooked figure, but is at this moment is still GB's top ranked teen, although Naomi Broady will just overtake her next Monday.  She is obviously also clearly at the very least a top 300 prospect, having this year risen 192 places to a current career high of 328.

I have not seen that much of her, and clearly she has limitations due to being so small.  Also, I have read folk saying before they feel her progress will be fairly limited due to her lack of real weapons.  I do also note maybe limited ambition ( realism ? ) in choice of tournaments.

Just wondered if anyone who knew more about her and her current game could add some thoughts.

It was a little unfair not to include Jade in my list but it was done on the premise that all the girls listed would hope for a top 300 ranking by the end of next year but also have shown the potential to go much further in subsequent years. It is for the same reason I didn't include Amanda Carreras.
Going back to Jade on what she has shown to date a top 300 ranking is well within her grasp but not much more. But giving Jade credit she has shown improvements to her game this year and if she was to make further improvements next year I would have to add her to my list. Lisa is a prime example of a player who has never shown the potential in the past but has achieved so much this year.
I watched Jade briefly at Sunderland this year and she didn't impress me only just doing enough to beat an unranked fellow brit. A very solid game with no weaknesses but with no real weapons either. This allows her to maintain her ranking by producing consistent performances against lower ranked players. I also watched a clip of her semi final match against Babos on you tube where she really tried to be more aggressive but the result was many more errors.
As for her height Cibulkova has shown it is possible to be very successful even if you are small in height so nothing is impossible.

I think Jade might do well to go down the doubles specialist route at some point; however, she is great to watch as a player and scraps for every point, and seems professional and dedicated. I understand she finally stopped being coached by her father halfway through this year (is that correct?) so who knows whether a new regime will have some effect.

I've seen all bar Lisa play (Robbo only on telly) and out of them I wish the best things for Tara. She's great to watch and has skipfuls of ability (ala Naomi B) but is hobbled a bit by brainfarts and a lack of altitude (not ala Naomi B).

It's a shame about Laura being held back by age restrictions but I'm sure that they are there for the best reasons.

From what I have observed younger players (dare I say especially girls?!) have a tendency to beat themselves when things don't go their way from point 1. The first of that bunch to settle down and learn to keep a level head will be the first of them to kick up to the ranking they deserve - purely from a personality perspective I would guess that Heather is looking like the one with the best temperament so I hope to see good things from her in 2010.

LOL @ Brainfarts - shows my level of humour... it's not indicative, honest!

I think I do agree for the most part with this analysis. Naomi B is my one to watch in 2010 - it's not like she had a bad year this year. If the injury hadn't hit, I'm fairly sure she'd have been closing in on the top 200 but if anything, I'm mainly basing that on the comeback win.

I think the Laura and Heather battle will be VERY intriguing. I can imagine those two fighting each other tooth and nail for highest junior player (in senior ranks) so that will be VERY exciting happy.gif

In the space of just a few events, Lisa has made her point and it will interesting to see which way she goes tennis-wise. I'm hoping it's not just "a few good events" for her. She hit my blind side this year so it will be interesting to see her progress next year.

It's the next crop of juniors we need to look at as well. Which ones are going to follow in the footsteps of Heather and Laura? Oooh... intrigue abounds. I love this sport so much happy.gif

Yes, next year promises to be very interesting.

I'd be very surprised though if Laura and Heather are particularly fighting against each other.  In the wider worldwide rankings there are a lot of really talented young junior age players, particularly of Heather's age, some of whom have had had Junior Grand Slam success, that will be trying to make there way up the rankings.  They are unlikely to particularly stand out and I'm sure they will be more interested in their own individual progress than against eah other.

I hope to see both Heather and Laura going as high as they can, but there are so many ways it can go for young players. particularly still as young as Laura.

I thought Phil's assessment of expecting to see Heather eventually reach a top 100 ranking was realistic, she has to me not yet shown that one would necessarily yet put higher expectation on her.  Though, it is possible that she is a slower developer than some and may eventually do really well, not that top 100 in itself wouldn't be a good achievement.

Laura, just for what she has done at a much younger age, and for what she has produced at her best this year, is certainly the player that at the moment of the two that personally much more excites me.  I expect to still see ups and downs with her in the coming year, but hopefully a little more consistentency coming into her game. For the moment, Laura is the one who I definitely think we have most to be excited about for what the future might bring.

I thought at the time these were well highlighted players by philwrig, and noone seemed to greatly disagree.  OK I might have personally added Jade C  to his list though longer term ( than the next year ) his 6 may be the best.

However the LTA in a list of 43 names for the Team AEGON 2010 funding list ( discussed in more depth in thread : http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?aBID=61841&p=3&topicID=32922589  )  manages somehow only to include 2 out of these 6 highlighted players ( Heather and Laura ).

It's even worse when one considers that this is supposedly a forward looking list and excludes some higher ranked players ( in this case generally male ).

I totally agree with philwrig that these are a really talented group of women players coming through and to my mind more relatively talented and definitely I'd say more chance of making real progress in the game than some AEGON 2010 listed male players at a similar stage in their careers.

OK, we know there are issues with Naomi, but overall still vey strange and not helping to bring through this generation.

Joss also has the potential to be a very good doubles player. She has already had some success playing with Jade C, Jade W and Mel.
