Also, do we have to have these advertising banners at the top, is it possible to get rid of them and if so, how much does it cost?

I haven't had any issues at all with the William Hill site. As Drew said it's certainly worth folk trying to make sure their pop up blocks are in place if they want to avoid such stuff.

Re Shhh's point about advertsing banners, I would imagine that it costs a not neglible amount to have run an activeboard site like this with sufficient bandwith.

To be honest, the adverts don't really bother me at all, and I am sure folk generally don't want to contribute to this site, good as it is ( well I don't smile

) , and I certainly don't think that these who run it should bear a cost that can be offest by accepting adverts.

perhaps its something on my pc but i am also getting these scam antispyware pages come up too now.

Count, interestingly, after me mentioning having pop up controls in place and I thjink mine are, I too have this morning had what I took to be a scam antispyware / virus message while on this site ( which may just be coincidence ) and I had to restart to get rid of the flaming thing.

I have very occasionally had similar in the past, and run my Norton which seems to confirm all is OK.

Me too with the anti-spyware thing - I too had to restart. I have Kaspersky internet security and it seems quite happy that everything is ok.

yeah all the spyware stuff is just 'scareware', trying to con people out of money to fix imaginary problems - its more likely to put a virus on your system to make it a 'zombie' machine!

Stick to one of the big brands like AVG (even the free version is good), Norton, Laspersky, keep it updated and you should generally be fine.

but its a bit worrying all this is cropping up, and it could well be related to those new iffy banners.

i think it could be worth looking into costs to host the site properly, once we know we can make a decision on if its worth it. esp if we want BT.net to look professional.

I got a really nasty virus (not from here) the other day called security tool, basically it blocked a lot of programs on my computer including anything that could possibly get rid of it.

In the end I had to reset my computer a few days back to get it back to normal.

And yes, I keep getting William Hill and that scam antispyware thing coming up, the moment I see that anitspyware thing I just close the window as wuick as possible and seem to have avoided damage thus far.

I have just had the dubious pleasure of being sent to the William Hill site from here ( first time for me ), that added to earlier today again having to restart due to scam anti-spyware while on this site.

I did say earlier in the thread that I personally have no problems with the adverts as such, particularly if they help revenue wise.

But it does look as if they may well be connected to these other problems folk are experiencing.
