Week 32 - WTA ($2M) - Cincinnati, USA

The impact of the global recession has been particularly strong in the USA, leading to a dearth of tournaments this month, and consequently high cut-offs for those still in the calendar. As a result Elena Baltacha just scraped in to qualifying here at the last minute.

(8) Ayumi Morita (JPN) v Elena Baltacha (GBR)
Jill Craybas (USA) v (16) Viktoriya Kutuzova (UKR)

Bally attempts to break her US duck first match on court 4 at 3pm BST. Morita retired from her last match, which may give hope.

Yeh with gastro-intestinal illness - grim! Sadly she may have recovered from it, but Morita does always seem to retire...

In fact, Morita hasnt won since before the French, and is on a 7 loss streak, though tbf, she has lost to pretty decent players so that shouldnt be looked into too much

It was the fourth time this year that Morita has retired after being bagelled in the first set.

Bally went down an early break apparently, retrieved it but went on to lose the first set 7-5

Bally went a break down in set 2, broke straight back, and was then broken again for 3-1

Currently 5-7 2*-5

So the bad run contiues. Just can't see her breaking the top 100 anytime soon.

Not top 100 material it seems. She is too fragile mentally to make it, which is very sad.
