L16: (6) Naomi Cavaday WR 251 beat (Q) Anastasiya Prenko (TKM) WR 721 by 4 & 3 smile.gif

QF: (6) Naomi Cavaday WR 251v (2) Nikola Hofmanova (AUT) WR 215 http://www.nikihofmanova.com/

Naomi beat Hofmanova 0 & 4 in Felixstowe two years ago but Hofmanova was only 16 at the time. I'd still hope Cav could take her without too much trouble though, despite being lower-ranked.

Not winning as easy as should be Cav hoping she can move up a gear for rest of tourny.

yeah, but glad she isn't peaking too soon, as as been the problem throughout her whole career so far, keep it up Cav!

Cav lost 2-6 6-7 . Another shocking loss for GB woman's tennis. Coupled with Anne's injury the current position is pretty bleak. Even our in form players are getting beaten. Please Katie come to our rescue.

Oh dear, that really is a shock loss despite the rankings. Still, during the TdF, Wiggo tended to do well when Cav did badly, so hopefully Tara Wigan will manage to win in Belgium today. (clutching at straws)

Why is it such a shock?

Outranked and outseeded with a H2H that means nothing as the opponent was 16 at the time and probably playing her first ever match on grass.

Give Cav a break. QF is encouraging. Of course a win here would have been good too but don't get why this is so SHOCKING.

Shocking because Cav was in good form and we know she is at least a top 150 player.
I think as it comes on the back of several poor performances from the other British players it is further evidence that all is not well at the moment. Her form this week hadn't inspired confidence and I think she is a bit of an enigma in that she blows hot and cold very quickly . One minute showing top100 potential and then the next minute struggling to beat someone ranked 500 in the world. She has a tendency to win the first set exceptionally easily and then struggle to win the second. But this was always going to be a transition year following her illness so we should probably cut her some slack.

I agree with johnnylad, I thought this was a 50/50 opportunity - in fact I'd argue that on potential Hofmanova is maybe better than Naomi - she has a much better junior record and this is her first year in senior's and she's already won a 50K and runner up in two others. Much better than Naomi's record. It's difficult to go on player's potential especially when they're coming back from injury/illness etc because they usually aren't playing to their highest level, Naomi's going to have to earn it week in week out like everyone else. I still think Naomi can push back up into the top 200 again by the end of the year.

I agree that we should cut Cav some slack, that Hofmanova is a bright prospect and that the H2H means nothing, but we think Cav's way too good not to be in the top 200 (don't we?) and is only ranked lower than Hofmanova because she hasn't got a full year of tournaments in her ranking, so in that sense it's a very disappointing loss.

Looking on the bright side, Cav's run this week will take her back into the top 250 smile.gif

Agree 100% with philwrig. She really should be beating these players but the return to form and gaining consistency has been slow as we saw in the Wimbledon qualies and it is continuing to happen, she'll get there, but this was a fair result anyway.
