Week 30 Challenger - Belo Horizonte ($35k+H) - Brazil

Goodall will turn up here on his own of course after James pulled out.
He turns out seeded 5th at the event but is in the same quarter as the 2nd seed Zeballos (an argentine clay courter). In the first round Goody faces Rogerio Dutra Da Silva (pauses for breath), a brazilian ranked 231. The brazilian has played a vast majority of his tennis on the clay this year and i would say Josh starts as a big favourite.

This is Josh's first event on hard courts after the grasscourt season, so he will be keen to adapt to a surface that will now take him through the rest of the year. I hope he can get a quarter final here at least and like i have mentioned before, look for around 60-80 points from the 3 weeks spent in Brazil to really warm up to the hard courts just before US Open qualies.

Im not to sure of the speed of the courts in Brazil, although i presume it will be quite hot, so will encourage the ball to fly through the air a bit quicker helping Josh with his aggressive play especially on the big first serve. I would hope for him to try and keep points short and pick up where he left off from Wimbledon, serve-volleying when neccesary, just to keep all the pressure on his opponent. At times, Goody has shown in the grass court season just how good he is at the net, really attacking it as often as possible which has worked, but then not doing it as much or as effectively on the hard courts leading to the end of the year, which it would still work on as these can still be very fast, like the US Open courts, where he can do well.

Jonny Marray played here last year and played a lot of tiebreaks so maybe the courts are pretty quick here.

Goodall teams up with Samuel Groth in the doubles, together the unseeded pair take on Brazilian duo Marcelo Demoliner and Rodrigo Guidolin, with a chance of facing the 4th seeds in the second round.
They are in the same half of the draw as the top seeds.
Goodall/Groth should be quite a force on the doubles courts both possesing huge serves and both liking to serve-volley quite often and have solid volleys at the net. So heres hoping for some success here for Yoshi and extending his run of doubles form from Manchester. :D

Personally im not a fan of Josh in singles, but i think he could be a pretty decent doubles player

Of course i won't tell him that - too many doubles specialists and all that...

Josh is 1st on the second court tomorrow at 11.30 local, 15.30 BST.

They too have a twitter feed: http://twitter.com/bhtennisopen

Belo Horizonte in the south of Brazil is most notorious over here for being the place where England suffered a shock loss to the USA in the 1950 World Cup.

He then plays his doubles as well, with a one match break after his singles on the same court. Lets hope for two wins off Josh today :D.

josh has been updating his own twitter from Brazil. May be worth trying if the tournament one does a Lexington and misses his result.

The twitter feed from Belo Horizonte seems to be complete rubbish - they haven't updated it since PRE-qualifying 6 days ago!

If that score is correct (which it looks like it is) its really disappointing. Of course we dont know the circs behind the score but, after a summer when he seemed to be playing well but not picking up too many points, it reminds me of earlier in the year when Josh had some shocking results. Huge points to defend the next two weeks, its looking grim disbelief.gif

Not a good result, but looks like a bit of a battle. With that scoreline, Josh might have been only broken the one time in the match thats how tight it is. Its very bad to come out on the losing end of these kind of matches as well. I presume Josh wont be happy, but hopefully can find some form in the dubs later on and go deep in that, just so he can push off something for next week.
