Matthew Montcourt

I couldn't see anyone else mentioning this:

Matthew Montcourt has been found dead on the stairwell of his apartment.

i had already made and article, but that headline if f'ing disgraceful. Betting on a match does not equate to match fixing. he bet, what £100 over 36 matches. ok maybe he was silly to do it, but i hardly think what he did deserves to be vilified with, esp when he has just died in tragic circumstances

Sad news.

Agree with CZ, even BBC radio news led with "A tennis player who was charged with betting..." (May even have mentioned match fixing) - there really isn't any need, surely a tragic death puts everything else into perspective.  To make matters worse, the metro have spelt his name wrong.

So have you Portsey, it's Mathieu, not matthew

RIP Mathieu Montcourt

I've just merged the topics together. That really is disgraceful reporting by Metro. Montcourt, like just about every player who's been suspended for betting so far, was placing small bets a few years ago when even if it was against the rules, it was probably tolerated. He never bet on his own matches. It strikes me that these bans are just a piece of tokenism designed to deflect attention from the fact that they can't catch the real culprits, where far more money would be involved and it wouldn't be done in their own name!

Next they'll be trying to link the deaths of Montcourt (which seems to have been from natural causes) and Luzzi (who by weird coincidence was also suspended for betting at one stage, but whose death was definitely by natural causes) with the Russian mafia ...

It's very sad - he seems to have had plenty of friends on the circuit who thought a lot of him (e.g. I've come across tributes from both Rafa and Hutch just by chance) and must have been an unimaginable shock for his poor girlfriend.

I am so sorry to hear this.  I have added a comment to the Metro article, in which I make clear how much of a disgrace I consider their headline to be. It is awaiting moderation

Well, my comment has been added, I think as I wrote it minus a point about their spelling of his name :

"That headline is an absolute disgrace to a young tennis player who has just died. As the actual article says he placed quite a number of small bets on matches, never his own. Probably like a few other players, a bit of entertainment although undoubted stupid breaking of the rules. He was banned for placing bets on tennis matches, nothing more. To equate it with match fixing and international cartels, which may indeed be a problem and not involving petty amounts like this, in such a headline way is shameful and one can only hope none of his family see this."

The other comment so far is from a Danish guy who has similar sentiments and begins : "How dare you make that title".

they didn't print my comment. Maybe i was too harsh? i said they headline write should be ashamed and they should show some respect to the dead plus a few other things.

It's not unheard of for sports people to die naturally of a heart attack - you hear of footballers dropping dead on the pitch. When you're pushing your body to the limits, particularly if you have a slight heart defect, anything can happen.

Of course, there could be other explanations - we shouldn't speculate too much though.
