I thought it might be interesting to see how the home WCs have done in the other slams over the last 12 months compared to how our WCs did at Wimbledon:
2008 US Open
- 4 straight sets losses in R1 (Evans, Jenkins, Delic, Krajicek to Golubev, Nieminen, Ginepri & Calleri respectively) - 1 four set loss in R1 (Levine to the Gooch) - 1 R1 win (Warburg, when Tipsy retired (!), he then lost to Almagro in straight sets in R2)
- 5 straight sets losses in R1 (Oudin, Brdsky, Muhammad, Rolle & Vandeweghe to Aussie swap WC Moore, Szavay, Rezai & Wozniacki) - 1 three set loss in R1 (Jackson to A Bondarenko)
2009 Aus Open
- 2 straight sets losses in R1 (Ebelthite & Ball to A Beck & Berrer respectively) - 1 four set loss in R1 (Groth to Fish) - 2 R1 wins (Tomic beat Starace in 5 sets then lost to Muller in 4; Klein beat qualifier Phau in 4 sets then lost to Stani in straights)
- 2 straight sets losses in R1 (Wejnert & Holland to Knapp & Medina Garrigues respectively) - 1 three set loss in R1 (Rogowska to A Bondarenko) - 2 R1 wins (Moore, who beat US swap WC McHale then lost to Pennetta in straights, and Dokic, who reached the QFs)
2009 Roland Garros
- 4 straight sets losses in R1 (Sidorenko, Mannarino, Jouan & Recouderc to Safin, Robredo, Roddick & PHM respectively) - 2 R1 wins (Rufin beat Schwank then lost to Melzer in straights, Ouanna beat Granollers & Safin then lost to Gonzo)
- 4 straight sets losses in R1 (Sanchez, Pavlovic, Laisne & Feuerstein to Rus, Amanmuradova, Groth & Kuznetsova respectively) - 2 three set losses in R1 (Loit & Mladenovic to Baczinsky & Rybarikova respectively)
2009 Wimbledon
- 3 straight sets losses (Evo, Boggo & Wardy to Kolya, Berdbrain & Verdasco respectively) - 1 five set loss (Goodall to Llodra)
- 1 straight sets loss (South to Johansson) - 3 three set losses (O'Brien, Stoop & Robson to Benesova, Zvonareva & Hantuchova respectively) - 1 R1 win (Baltacha beat A Bondarenko then lost to Flipkens)
USO TOTAL: 12 played, 11 R1 losses (of which 9 in straights), 1 R1 win by retirement followed by a loss in straights Aus O TOTAL: 10 played, 6 R1 losses (of which 4 in straights), 4 R1 wins (including Dokic, who wasn't your typical home WC)
RG TOTAL: 12 played, 10 R1 losses (of which 8 in straights), 2 R1 wins (one against another WC, Ouanna getting to R3)
Wim. TOTAL: 9 played, 8 R1 losses (of which 4 in straights), 1 R1 win
So, it seems pretty clear that our WCs did better at Wimbledon than the US WCs did at the US Open.
Given what tough draws the GB WCs got at Wimbledon this year (particularly the men) and that less than half of the losses were in straight sets, I would argue that our WCs did not do significantly worse than the French WCs did at RG either.
The only home WCs who really did better than the Brits were the Aussies, yet when you consider that their four R1 wins included wins against a qualifier and a fellow WC plus Dokic, who had been there and done that, all that really shows is that lower-ranked home players are most likely to win if they get nice draws, and Eaton & Bloomers have shown in recent years that lower-ranked Brits are more than capable of doing that too.
Also, Alona Bondarenko has drawn home WCs at 4 of the last 5 slams, going to three sets with all of them, and Elena was the first one to beat her!
