Wimbledon 1st round: J Ward vs F Verdasco

A great chance for Ward to finally show himself to the world I think. He's had some results at Queens which is big, but now its Wimbledon.

Im hoping he can push the spaniard on a surface hes not best comfortable on, but then again neithers Wardy.

well the only person he beat this year on grass was anjular, but he does have a 28-15 record over all on the surface. this year he lost to becker & Petschener.

last year he lost 13-11 in 5th set to ancic, R16 (is that QF's?) so i doubt he will run out to steam vs wardy.

Very nervy start from Ward, saving 2 break points before being broken to 40 by Verdasco. 0-1*

i wonder who won the toss. may have been better for wardy to receive, get a bit of time to settle under no pressure to hold the serve.

*3-0 down now... bad start from Ward making far too many errors...not looking good for him at the moment.

ok, not looking good. wardy has to try and net rush or something, he's going to get pounded from the back of the court.

Break down in the second set now as well :(

Not playing very well, but the problem he's got is he hasn't got a way to beat Verdasco as if he tries to trade from the back of the court he's going to lose, and he's not comfortable at the net and doesn't volley well enough to net rush.

Not looking good for anything other than a one-sided straight sets wins for Verdasco.

It seems a combination of Ward getting more into the match and finding his game and Verdasco dropping a level that has enabled his set to be more competitive.

Would expect Verdasco to get a break at the end of the set or him to take it in a tiebreak though, but if Ward can put a few points together than he could take this to a 4th set.

That was the chance... should have broken in that game and that will probably be the best chance he'll get in this set.

Would expect Verdasco to break now.
