RE: 2009 Roland Garros 'Battle of the Boards' pick 'em contest

RG BOTB SFs 'SYNDICATED' REPORT

Two 5-set semi-final thrillers ended up as wins for Fed (picked by 55%) and the Sod, who has managed to go three rounds further than anyone predicted! Only the 20% of entrants who picked Fed to win the Final can still gain points. I wonder what 'Rogi' would have said if he'd been offered this Final before RG started ...

Detailed results can be found at http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html

TEAMS and OUTLOOK

Despite getting a below average score in the semis, R1 winners BT.net held onto 1st place and will win the teams league unless Fed wins the title, when they will drop to 4th. 2nd placed BBC 606, who won the R4 and QF rounds, will finish as runners up whatever happens.

25/26 of the Feddies picked their boy to reach the Final (the 26th is probably claiming that she didn't want to see Mirka put through another match of this kind of stress!), so of course they won the SF round and are the biggest risers of the day, up 3 to 3rd. They will win the teams league if their hero completes his career slam.

World no. 3s Team CC, the second biggest group of Fedophiles (19/25 picked him to reach the Final), are now the highest placed out of the top six teams in the overall rankings in 4th place and will finish in the top three for RG if Fed goes on to win. However, R2 winners and team KO finalists Rusedski.co.uk (WR 4) are still likely to take over as new world no. 1s despite dropping 2 to 5th today. The only other team to move more than one place was AM.com, down 2 to 10th - they will drop another place if Fed wins on Sunday.

TEAM KO FINALS - after 6 of 7 matches:

FINAL: (7) Assorted Individuals lead (5) Rusedski.co.uk 10.79-8.89
3-4: (1) BritishTennis.net lead (14) RichardGasquet.net 11-8.22
5-6: (8) Centre Court Forum lead (11) LleytonHewitt.biz 12.16-8.4
7-8: (2) TalkAboutTennis lead (4) AndyMurray.com 10.45-7.79
9-10: (10) BBC 606 boards lead (16) Tennisopolis.com 13.6-9.77
11-12: (6) Other Boards lead (12) AndyRoddick.com 9.52-6.82
13-14: (13) RogerFederer.com lead (3) Tennis4you.com 13.27-11.5
15-16: (15) MensTennisForums lead (9) JamieMurray.org 10.52-8.15

TOP 10 and OUTLOOK

SoraOblivion62 (TA), up 1 to 1st, took over the lead today. He (not she - apologies for that error in the QF report!) will finish 2nd if Fed wins the Final, 1st if the Sod does. Shabba (IN), up 1 to 2nd, and EdLavis (BB), up 1 to 3rd, complete the new top three.

The only entrant who did not pick Fed to reach the Final but has nevertheless held onto a place in the top 10 is former leader Roy (GR), down 7 to 8th. Other who did pick him to get there and have moved up within the top 10 are DR4Life (AM), up 2 to 4th, Timmadigan (CC), up 3 to 5th, Chloe F (RF), up 3 to 6th and wolf (BT), up 3 to 7th.

Completing the new top 10, Dusty Dick (BT), up 2 to 9th, and zephblabs (TA), up 2 to 10th, replace David Thompson (AM), down 14 to 19th, and Oploskoffie (TA), down 14 to 21st.

The top entrant who picked Fed to reach the Final, tennisfan78 (TY) (up 2 to 11th after the SFs) may not be in the top 10 yet but will win the competition if Fed wins the title, while in that case michael9191 (TN), up 7 to 14th today, will finish 3rd. Whether or not you have Fed to win, who wins the Final will affect the overall ranking points you pick up from this event.

ON THE RISE

The three biggest risers of the day were Sher (CC), up 46 to 233rd, GS2 (IN), up 46 to 234th, and Steven (GR), up 46 to 236th.

I would be celebrating this rare mention in one of my own reports if only I wasn't so far down the table that I couldn't possibly get a counting score from this tournament! However, at least it means I finish ahead of at least two former no. 1s (Linda & ASE) three of the current top 10 and the person I run this contest with, so I'm thankful for small mercies!

DODGY DROPPERS

Lots of entrants dropped more than 50 places today, but only faller of the day orangecode (CC), down 75 to 201st, and world no. 4 Pebs (MP), down 72 to 203rd, dived more than 70.

The Rafa of RG BOTB (i.e. won it at a canter in 2008, had a 'mare in 2009) is world no. 3 (for two more days) hebegeebee (IN), down 9 to 369th (bottom 30) today. He has suffered after making what can only be called the beginner's mistake of trusting the same GEM twice. Last year he was richly rewarded for being the only entrant who trusted GaEl Monfils to reach the semis but this year he trusted him when he said he was injured and had him going out to Bobby Reynolds in R1!

NOTE re. OVERALL RANKINGS and WIMBY BOTB

The final RG results will definitely be posted on Sunday, but I will be away on business for a week soon afterwards, so the overall rankings may be delayed. If so, they will definitely be published by the time Wimbledon BOTB entries open on Friday 19 June.

Talking of Wimby BOTB, we may set a Sunday deadline if qualifying finishes on time, so please don't assume that you will necessarily be able to enter Wimby BOTB at the very last minute.

Final results are now up at http://www.britishtennis.net/competitions.html - I'm away on business for a week from tomorrow and racing to get stuff finished before I go, so while I'm hoping to be able to update the GB top 25 tables from time to time, I won't have time to add all the new players into the overall pick 'em ranking list and publish a new one on the site until a few days before Wimbledon.

However, quick and dirty versions of the provisional new team rankings and the provisional new individual top 250 (which can't be affected by newbies because newbies can't get that many points from just one event) can be found at

^^ That'll be Bethan, and thanks Drew. smile.gif

Well done to Wolf (15th) and Dusty Dick (18th) for finishing in the top 20 and Smidster, abc, Akhenaten, Christian, Johnnylad and Grundon for a top 60 finish (out of 394) in a very tough pick 'em.

Well done again Dusty, who has soared up 62 places to 5th in the overall rankings and is the only BT.net player in the top 10 now that Akhenaten has dropped from 9th to 19th - he finished 5th at RG this year, which is why he dropped despite a strong top 50 finish this year too - quite the master of the Parisian 'terre battue' is Mr Akhenaten! wolf, up 60 to 16th, gives you three in the overall top 20 heading into Wimby.

POST-2009 ROLAND GARROS PICK 'EM RANKINGS

The overall ranking list (with 870 ranked players) and the pick 'em 'Hall of Fame' after RG 2009 can now (better late than never!) be found at http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html

TEAMS

2nd place in the RG team KO (1st out of the full teams, since Assorted Individuals, used as a filler team to make the numbers up to 16, won the title) and a top 5 finish in the league were enough to lift Rusedski.co.uk 3 places to 1st.

A double 2nd place finish at the AO and 2nd in Rome (as well as their top points from the RG KO) means that the Rusers have performed very consistently so far this year. They are defending KO 1st place and league 2nd place points at Wimbledon, so their no. 1 status may be short-lived, but they then have nothing to defend for the rest of the year, so could well mount a challenge for the year end no. 1 slot.

One of the reasons why they hit no. 1 though was that the other top teams did not have a good RG, with AM.com, still in 2nd (but with 3rd and 2nd place points to defend at Wimbledon), and TAT, down 2 to 3rd after just a month at no. 1, both failing to get a counting score. Team CC dropped another place to 4th despite managing their first top three finish since Wimby 2008 (they have 1st and 3rd place points to defend over the next fortnight), but BT.net, 3rd in the RG KO, moved up 2 to 5th.

The only other teams moving up more than one place were RG teams league winners the Feddies, up 2 to 9th, and the Hewitts, up 2 to 13th, while RG lanternes rouges MTF dropped 2 to 10th, the Dammitaires dropped out of the top 10 to 11th and the Ducklings fell 2 to 14th.

TOP 10 INDIVIDUALS

Rome may have been a bad tournament for most of the top players, with only three of the pre-Rome top 10 managing to get counting scores, but Roland Garros was the worst tournament for the top 10 (and even those just outside the top 10) that I can remember!

Only two of the previous top 10 managed to get a score from RG that was good enough to be one of their best 7 scores and even they failed to match their RG points from last year. With nobody just outside the previous top 10 doing well either, the new top four are all players who had little or no points to defend at RG.

The new world no. 1, much to her surprise, is Pebs (MP), up 3 to 1st, though with Wimbledon 3rd place points to defend, she needs to make sure she enjoys it while it lasts! Miffy (AM) also moves up 3 to 2nd with GoGo (AM) up 5 to 3rd and Pingponger (TA) up 6 to 4th.

The first of the new players in the top 10 after RG is Dusty Dick (BT), up 62 to 5th after finishing 18th at RG. He is just ahead of long-time no. 1 Ashley Harkleroad's ***** (MP), who drops 5 to 6th.

Also new in the top 10 are kaseldop (GR), up 16 to 7th after finishing 66th at RG, s0mil (TY), up 15 to 9th (30th at RG), and timmadigan (CC), who finished 13th at RG, while Fedex (GR), down 1 to 8th, is the sixth member of the previous top 10 to still be in there.

Falling out of the top 10, Dentist appointment (IN), down 7 to 13th, missed RG altogether. The only member of the previous top 10 to figure in the RG top 150, Akhenaten (BT), managed a top 50 finish there for the second year in a row but was defending 5th place points so falls 10 to 19th. Wendy (AM) was defending 37th place points and falls 28 to 30th overall and last year's runaway RG winner hebegeebee (IN) had an even worse nightmare than Rafa this year, finishing in the bottom 30 and plummeting 38 places to 41st in the overall rankings.

ON THE RISE

Three players are knocking on the door of the top 10 with rises of 60 places or more after RG - Claire Thompson (JM), up 71 to 11th, and RG top 20 finishers mathiasR (RF), up 70 to 14th, and wolf (BT), up 60 to 16th.

2009 RG winner tennisfan78 (TY) rises 54 to 25th and runner-up SoraOblivion62 (TA) is up 103 to 31st, while 3rd placed michael9191 (TN) is the highest new entrant in 339th.

Climbing over 100 places into the top 100 like Sora are BORRO2 (RF), up 123 to 38th, T01 (CC), up 115 to 66th, Daniel/Belgarath1981 (RF), up 104 to 73rd, Ollie361 (IN), up 131 to 85th, Zebra Melanija (RF), up 111 to 86th after finishing 9th at RG, Shabba (IN), up 108 to 91st after finishing 6th at RG, and Roy (GR), up 142 to 99th.

Of the top 10 finishers at RG, only 4th placed bfp (SG), up 44 to 15th, and the RG top two are higher placed than the two top ten finishers mentioned in the last paragraph, but 8th placed Jude (GR), up 177 to 146th, 10th placed Jose Javier/Buyaka86 (RF), up 156 to 172nd, and 7th placed EdLavis (BB), up 204 to 188th, are the three highest risers in the top 200, while Ace! (AM), up 229 to 210th, is just outside.

By coincidence, the cut-off point for the top 250 is exactly 2000 points, and while The One (AM), up 285 to 280th, and Orn (AM), up 243 to 282nd, just missed out on this, they are the highest risers in the top 300.

The only players rising more than 300 places are jack.hl.ng (CC), up 333 to 355th, Vixs (AM), up 332 to 364th, and fastest riser Nico (LH), up 364 to 390th, while the highest new entrant was mentioned four paragraphs ago.

LAST YEAR'S RG WINNERS

The big fallers are usually those who didn't play in the latest pick 'em and are running out of counting scores, so when looking at fallers it's probably more interesting to see how the top threes in the two tournaments coming off from last year have fared.

Last year's RG winner has already been mentioned among those dropping out of the top 10, but last year's runner-up (and a former world no. 1) Linda (AM) drops 137 to 218th after a bottom half finish this time, while Jack (TA), who hasn't played yet this year, drops another 176 to 304th.

OTHERS IN NEED OF A PARACHUTE

The biggest faller I can find who still has a foothold in the rankings is Azarielle (RG), down 403 to 858th, while the highest-ranked player to drop out of the rankings after RG is Zutoum (RG), 13th at RG last year, who falls out from 342nd.

I have debuted inside the top 200 and I am therefore very happy!

Now then, Wimbledon, do not cause me trouble or I WILL CURSE YOU.

Given that none of my Wimby points count to my score, I'm in good hands right now! YAY!
