RE: Johanna Konta

In today's new ranking list Johanna is confirmed at another new CH, up one place to a Laura's-CH-equalling WR27.

One more place would see her the highest ranked Brit for almost 29 years, since the rankings of 26/04/1987, when it was, of course, Jo Durie that set the mark, in that week of WR26.
(How good was Jo Durie! Never got the recognition, and only perhaps now, when some of her marks are being erased, do we appreciate the fullness of her legacy.)

Unfortunately I suppose Jo at the time was rather compared against Virginia Wade and Sue Barker before her and so it was a bit "yea, so ...".

Great player

Congrats again JoKo :D

Yep, Jo Durie was our number 1 for 10 years, I think, and by the end she was just praying for ANY other British women player to come along to take up the mantel properly; she and Jeremy Bates on the men's side were our only top 100 players for a lot of years

Jo is on BBC2 (Clare Balding) tonight and ITV (Jonathan Ross) on Saturday

Also, she'll be new CH 26 (overtaking Laura's best) if Petkovic loses her Dubai QF (about to start against Garcia)

And she's on the WTA Valentine...women's tennis in GBR has arrived has it not?! biggrin

Congrats JoKo biggrin

You'd rather it came about through on court endeavours, but congratulations to Johanna; the highest ranked Brit lady for 29 years.

So, the debate begins, who of our current crop is 'the best'.
Jo has the highest ranking.
Laura the highest points haul (though this must be in serious threat from Jo in the next few months)
Heather though has 2 full WTA tour singles tournament titles, and thee doubles titles to boot.

Speaking only for myself, titles count above all else: Heather wins.
Hopefully all these, Naomi, and more will add to this debate in the seasons to come, and make it a hotly contested affair because of all the success we enjoy!

Dream big, why not!
As a dayglow orange reality star, with a wisp of candy floss on their head, is currently stating, whilst running for office stateside, may we, "get tired of all the winning we're gonna do!"

I'd also add that Heather has had three consecutive years ranked in the top 50. Consistency is a big thing. She has a lot of work to do this year to make it four years though...!

Laura has to me been the one that has looked that her high ranking was probably just a staging post and I most though of as a likely clear top 20 player. And the best of Laura has until recently been the best, although Jo may feel she has a say now.

'The best' is interesting indeed, with many different ways of looking at it such as short term ( I'd say Laura ) or over a longer term ( Heather ) and now Jo may be asserting herself on various indicators to be becoming the best of the best.

Just heard at the end of the Clare Balding Show on BBC 2 that Jo is going to be a guest next Thursday night.

I'll add a reminder next week.

Remember to watch it on I Player. OK, I totally forgot about it myself  disbelief

Joe Hart and Ricky Hatton are interviewed before Jo joins them so you can jump through it if you want.

And to be honest Jo didn't really get much time or opportunity to really make a connection.

I believe the 30 minutes on BBC were trimmed down from 60 minutes on BT Sport; in the 30 minutes she didn't get a fair crack of the whip but she came across nicely I thought without admittedly much chance to shine. Remember Wossy on Saturday next Indy :)

I thought she came across very well on BT Sport, very relaxed, lots of good quality banter, but I did see the full BT Sport version. She had a personal 15 minute slot, followed by another 15 minutes which she shared more with Ricky and Joe. Apparently the JR show appearance was a bit awkward according to a news report, will have to wait until tomorrow night to form my own opinion.

Just read an article about the Jonathon Ross show. Jo didn't come off too well apparently, came off rather icy.
