Maybe (quite possibly!) I'm out of touch, but is "chick" such a bad word? I would have thought there were more important things to get upset about. It was clearly not said in a derogatory manner (I was watching on TV).
No I don't think it's a 'bad' word but I imagine it could feel a bit patronising. I don't think he should be 'roasted' on Twitter but I think it's fair for people to call attention to it as sexism, like racism (and any other ism!!), can become acceptable when people don't react to all the small casual phrases and actions which don't amount to much in themselves, but do when added together. He's apologised and hopefully will think (although in Dan's case I'm not sure how likely this is) before he opens his mouth again. And that should be an end to it.
I think this is one of those words (like so many) where you have to be careful as to when you use it. I am sure that there are many girls/young ladies that would use the term for themselves in this way with the example of "chick flicks" that has been mentioned here already. If you spend time with these people, it can become acceptable within that group to use the term where nobody sees it as an insult. The problem then, is that it becomes habit to use it and others outside the group may take offense.
Dan immediately realized his error, apologized on air and on twitter. For me that should be the end of it.
If we are going to focus on language and erroneous use of words, we should be talking much more about the awful and truly disgusting racist abuse aimed at Gael Monfils on Instagram yesterday following his surprise defeat. It is so bad, I won't even try to summarize on here.
Oh my lord, just imagine what strife you'd get into now if the sort of dialogue used back in the 90s on a lads nightout, was available for public broadcast. World gone a bit OTT on many things, yes we've got to stamp out any ism's but this one for me not a problem. Still Evo wise to apologise in this day and age. I'm sure 'chicks' have described lads as much worse things on a girls nightout !!
Ilie Nastase was 100% out of line and deserves the book thrown at him, but this is so ridiculous.
In your experience of girls nights out, what derogatory terms have been used about blokes? . I've no real experience of sexist or even patronising language being used. We don't spend a lot of time talking about men! Although I am on a football forum as well and some of the language there about women is truly disgusting, and I've pulled them up on it. Using the word chick when you're not in an informal peer group could come across as a bit patronising. But Dan did apologise and that should be the end of it. He does seem to get a lot of stick that used to come Andy's way. Really sorry to hear about racist language being used to Gael Monfils.
I really enjoy his talent for tennis although he has taken time to mature and grow into it, I love his passion for sport in general. His rise in the rankings and media opportunities that have arisen have come relatively quickly as has the intensity of scrutiny of his every utterance, he is definitely an expert in the art of playing tennis. Expert utilisation of the media and social media will take some time. On the Richter scale of gaffs this is what a 1, I didn't even feel a tremor. Nastie however nearly took the bay bridge down again.

I think we all know ladies can give as good as they get, and in a lot of cases more so. I have a male friend who was a primary school teacher in a predominantly female environment, and he told me in the staff room that their husbands/partners got completely slated half the time, and their was a huge anti male sentiment. I think as men we all know which is the superior sex, we maybe physically stronger, but the girls generally rule the roost. In what is supposed to be a male dominated world we have 5 female political leaders in this country, and for the most part they do the job better than their male counterparts.
Moving the Bedene/Evans discussion over to here from the Madrid thread as Madrid has finished.
Aljaz was asked today if he had spoken to Dan since the comments were made. I quite like the attitude he takes with his response. He apparently laughed it off and said:
I havent yet. I will, if I see him. Ive got nothing against him. I think its funny. I like him as a person. I think tennis needs people like him. Hes honest, hes saying what he thinks.
