Fun article in the Daily Mail about a recent Apprentice candidate who tried briefly to make it on the pro tour. Sounds like he was a decent junior, knew Billy Harris, Marcus Willis etc.
Played a few futures in the UK, and won quite a few matches in qualifying but never enough to make a main draw and get a ranking. I think he was perhaps a bit unlucky at the time with some Futures having 3 rounds of qualifying back then (I remember some of the Spanish futures would have 4 rounds!)
He drew Evo in a futures qualies in early 2013 during one of Dan's spells in and out of the game. Lost 2 and 4, a decent score against someone who would make the US Open third round 6 months later, but he recalled feeling that Dan had 2 or 3 extra levels.
It seems to me that current and future ranking isn't that important - the fact that he is still enjoying the game is much more relevant. I find that he is still a joy to watch (with the sound off), even if he doesn't win very often.
Declares his ambition to make it back to the top 100
The most particuiar Dan bit is in just the 2 minutes near the end between 59 mins and 1:01. He signs off with "It's good fun".
Pretty good general Rome preview show, with Kelly Cates, Russell Fuller, the excellent Naomi Broady and Dan, discussing such as the Jannik Sinner return, Jack D, Katie B ( with interview ) and Emma ( with interview) just before the specific Dan part. Dan pretty frank about Emma's coaching situation - '"staggering" that she hasn't got something more solid in place and that she should "maybe just have got Petch at all costs if that's who she wanted" - ie. as full time coach.
I used to think Dan might be too much of a loose cannon for a media career but I increasingly see the possibilities.
I love Dan's frankness - he's the most compelling out of all the British tennis personalities. As a pundit, he would be way more entertaining than most.
I think Liam would make for a superb pundit too, having once interviewed him and seen him dip his toes into TV last year, but Dan's caustic soundbites are media gold.
Has Dan got married on the quiet? I've heard Alea referred to as his "wife" a few times including by Dan himself recently but not see any official announcement or wedding photos.
Has anyone heard any news about Evo and his injury? Its been a chunk of time now and no sign hes likely to play again this season. Do we know if he actually did break his wrist?
His ranking is slipping. Live 178 as I write - presumably an AO qualies place will be secure still? Given his age, there must be a concern over whether he wants to come back, but there is surprisingly nothing out there about the injury that I can see?
Could easily be a full 6 months for Dan so he gets a PR on return. Even the beginning of January is only 4 months. The general recovery will probably be done by then but getting it strong enough to play pro tennis is probably another little while.
