Week 19 - Challenger ($50k) - Sarasota USA

James Ward enters qualies as top seed.  A bye in the first round and 8th seeded Filip Krajinovic #514 the highest ranked player in his section.  3pts for qualifying in a challenger who's main draw cut fell to almost 400.

James is still entered for Kuwait the next two weeks.  As he'd unlikely to make the French Open qualies cut, I presume he is pushing for a top 250 spot to be eligible for a Wimbledon Wild Card.  Does anyone know when the cut off for that would be?

I should have said, a wild card has been given to a Brit, Adam Hunt, a new name to me.

Krajinovic is a horrible draw in the form a player ranked 514.

Miccini makes his long awaited comeback.

I wonder if the Kevin Arias on the draw is somehow related to Jimmy Arias?

Hunt is a 19 year old player from Surrey (what a surprise!) He played a pair of Futures qualies in 2007, losing both in straight sets, one of them to Greg Howe

Ward should qualify here, but Kranjinovic is a very dangerous player to have in his section - he's much better than the ranking suggests, but Ward should have enough to beat him.

Krajinovic didn't even get to the FQR, losing a tight QR2 match, so Wardy has a treat in store tomorrow:

QR2: James Ward WR 272 beat Roman Borvanov (USA) WR 569 by 2 & 3 smile.gif

FQR: James Ward WR 272 v Treat Conrad Huey (PHI) WR 1157

Bernard Tomic has the easiest run to the FQR here - he was due to play the winner of (WC) Yu v (WC) Arias in QR2, but Arias was a very late w/d and Yu had to be withdrawn for entering two tournaments in a week, since he signed in for qualifying in the Tampa Future as well, losing 3 & 0 in QR1. LOL

Huey beat David Baxendine 0 & 1 in Mexico recently and benefitted from Ward/Ebden's w/d in the doubles last week, but his only other experience of playing a Brit was beating Amadeus 5 & 3 five years ago.

If Wardy wanted some really easy qualifying points he should have gone to the Challenger in Blumenau, Brazil - 16 players in the Q draw, the top four ranked 246, 619, 696 and 1158!

Had he signed up for Brazil originally he'd have been seeded in the main draw. I still think he's picked right by staying in the States though. Having said that, looking at who the qualifiers may get in the main draw its hard to see beyond one win at most???

We forgot about Adam Hunt - he won his QR1 match 6-4 6-2 smile....

...before getting double-bagelled by Berankis in QR2! cry

Oops, apologies to Adam, that was a bad mistake.

FQR: (q1) James Ward WR 272 beat Treat Conrad Huey (PHI) WR 1157 by 3 & 2 smile.gif

L32: (Q) James Ward WR 272 v Michael Ryderstedt (SWE) WR 370 (CH: 130 in 2005)

Winner to play (2) Spadea or (Q) Berankis.

Ryderstedt has a 22-10 record against Brits (excluding the two matches he was due to play but didn't start in) and beat Wardy in Stockholm qualifying last October 7-6(7) 6-2 and beat Slabba in the Falun Future Final (both in his home country), but he lost to Huey last week and to Josh Milton in Sheffield in January, so hopefully those are good signs! smile.gif

Michael Ryderstedt can be very good on his day, at one point he was definatly the brightest scandi prospect, but career has rather stalled.
