2010 Commonwealth Games

Tennis will be back in the Commonwealth Games next year and already the Scottish media is wondering if Muzza can be convinced to play in New Delhi the week before next year's Shanghai Masters - see http://www.theherald.co.uk/search/display.var.2505356.0.scotland_planning_murray_swoop.php

That got me wondering who the top players in the Commonwealth are and (E&OE, naturally wink), I get the following top 25:

4 Muzza SCO
53 Hewitt AUS
93 Baggy CYP
109 Dancevic CAN
147 Devvarman IND

150 Guccione AUS
172 Anderson RSA
178 Amritraj IND
180 Boggo ENG
181 de Voest RSA

182 Ball AUS
191 Klein AUS
211 Luczak AUS
213 Matosevic AUS
229 Polansky CAN

230 Smeets AUS
232 Goodall ENG
253 Sirianni AUS
255 Groth AUS
275 van der Merwe RSA

285 Ward ENG
294 Qureshi PAK
307 Ebelthite AUS
309 Duclos CAN
315 Ebden AUS

In other words, if you leave out Andy, then even if all the rest turn up (highly unlikely given the lack of ranking points on offer, and I assume there will be a limit on the number of players per country too, as in the Olympics) it would only be about mid-range Challenger standard.

Nice to see Boggo in an international top 10 though! wink

Conversely, there are 16 Commonwealth doubles players in the top 100!

3 Nestor CAN
5 Paes IND
9 Knowles BAH
11 Bhupathi IND

19 Coetzee RSA
25 Kerr AUS
26 Fisher AUS
27 Moodie RSA

29 Huss AUS
35 Hutchins ENG
42 de Voest RSA
60 Murray SCO

63 Hanley AUS
70 Bopanna IND
89 Qureshi PAK
100 Junaid AUS

Top ten in the commonwealth eh? Well done Boggo!

It's an interesting question as whether Andy would play and then which other players would also choose to play here? I have this bizarre feeling we may not see anyone ranked inside the top 100... unless Baghdatis is convinced by Cyprus somehow.

I would hope Andy would play, but I can't see it. Colin could partner Jamie in the doubles so he should only play singles.

Maybe Flan the man should come out of retirement to play for Wales. biggrin.gif

Also Heather Watson I am sure would like to compete for Guernsey after her Commenwealth Youth Games gold medal.

also given the political situation over the UN recognition over turkish cyprus(which btw does not exist) i could see bahgdatitis pulling out by pressure.

They left the Commonwealth after their suspension was extended a few years ago. However, the Commonwealth lifted it travel ban on Zimbabwe two days ago, so I guess they might be back in the Commonwealth soon as well.

Women's list is interesting...

1: Wozniak 26 CAN
2: Stosur 31 AUS
3: Anne 54 ENG
4: Dokic 72 AUS
5: Erakovic 80 NZL
6: Mirza 93 IND
7: Dubois 102 CAN
8: Mel 107 ENG
9: Katie 126 ENG
10: Bally 137 SCO

11: Moore 142 AUS
12: Scheepers 144 RSA
13: Georgie 181 ENG
14: Ferguson 210 AUS
15: Fichman 211 CAN
16: Adamczak 232 AUS
17: Grandin 250 RSA
18: Giraud 269 MRI
19: El Tabakh 270 CAN
20: Marino 272 CAN

Interesting to see we have 4 girls inside the Commonwealth top 10! Again, question for most is would they go?

Zimbabwe voluntarily pulled out back in '03. The only nation currently suspended is Fiji (for the second time).

I'm sure if you asked the 300,000 Cypriots who live north of Nicosia they would tell you differently.

JOSH

turkish cyprus does not exist, as it is not recognised by the UN and only by turkey.
thus the pressure for northen cyprus to have a separate team and entity my put pressure on bagh to withdraw
there is many turkish cyrpiots who refuse to play for the national soccer team.

thanks wolf.

so if Boggo gets selected for this it would mean he probably couldn't defend his Kolding points - ouch.

i fancy Andy's biggest threat might actually come from Tomic. Im guessing Bhambri might be pretty decent by this stage too
