South is first alternate for the French Open so surely will get in (I can't see Sharapova making it for starters).

Not that is necessarily a good thing.

She'll probably consider it a good thing to be there whatever happens, but now she's a DA, she'll be forced to count RG even if she goes out in R1, which will mean just 5 points knocking out her current 16th best of 10, whereas seeded high in qualifying she'd have had a better chance of winning a match and getting 40 points.
