Rome Masters 'Battle of the Boards' pick 'em 2009

The ROME MASTERS 1000 'BATTLE OF THE BOARDS' PICK 'EM contest is now open for entries at http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html

Qualifiers will be placed by Sunday evening UIK time, but you are welcome to enter before that if you need to, as long as you don't mind picking matches involving qualifiers 'blind'.

Entries will close at 11.00 GMT (noon UK / 13.00 CET / 7 am US EDT) on MONDAY 27 APRIL.

As usual, if anyone would like to encourage potential new team members by telling them how much fun these competitions are, please go ahead!

Good luck!

Rome BotB history

Rome had 41 entries in 2007 and I won it (something tells me that's never going to happen again!) with the Count in 2nd, AllyB in 3rd and AM.com winning the team event. In 2008, it had four times as many entrants (164) and BalaK won, with lainey 2nd, DR4Life 3rd and the Dammitaires winning the team event - Rafa's injury must have turned it into a bit of a muppet show last year because the Ducklings finished 3rd as well! BT.net finished 2nd both times.

We won't quadruple entries again, but I would expect to get 200-250.

Overall rankings

If you missed them at the time, the overall team and individual rankings after Miami can be found here - note that both MC 2008 and Rome 2008 will come off after Rome 2009 since we dropped MC this year, it no longer being a mandatory ATP event.

The rankings are getting particularly interesting as we come into the part of the year where no. 1 team CC had most of their biggest successes last year - both AM.com and TAT are snapping at their heels and could even overtake after Rome. In addition, 7 of the top 10 in the individual rankings have top 10 finishes from either MC or Rome 2008 due to come off at the end of Rome 2009!

Up next ...

After Rome, the next two BOTBs will both be for slams - RG and Wimby.

Ok, this time i'm taking a scientific approach (minus biased Czech picks!) for the first time and am toiling away hard considering H2H meets, competency on surface, form, etc. My fiancee, in realising my dedication on a warm sunday afternoon to BT pick 'em has just shaked her head in despair and said "i don't understand why you do it" (i try to get her to play but she takes the high ground).........

.....Anyway, i'm looking forward to a worse competition than last time, it's difficult to work out a lot of the middle rank players standard on clay, i fear the worst already!

The incentive for getting her to play is that if she does, she'll understand. smile.gif

Time to surface again - have just moved back to the UK after living in Belgium for 12 years. I was going to keep my country as Belgium as it makes it easy to find myself on the results table but the entry form does ask for honesty so I've changed it. I think if I scroll up from the bottom this time, it won't take me long to find my name! I'm rubbish at predicting clay court matches. Still, I shall enjoy the next few hours when the entry is done and I can still imagine that I've made some reasoned choices.

Annoyingly I shall be out all day tomorrow and will miss it all.

Johnnylad - I assume you meant to enter for BT.net, not British Tennis Zone?

I know it's possibly a bit early to be defeatist, but my whole entry is in tatters already.

Apart from the 'chose the seed to get maximum WPSLR in rd2' selections I'm 100% wrong so far.

God I hate this stupid festering competition.

I have 4 out of 6 so far... which all things considered is quite good for me. Can we stop the competition now? I'll most likely be top... 200? That'll do me right now!

better blow my own trumpet quick as i have gimeno-traver 1 game away from defeat, BUT currently have 100% (8 from 8) and therefore totally support Silver's view to stop the comp now ;)

I'm sure Steven can enlighten us to which branch of advanced , but slightly surreal, mathematics gives the gorillas 4.5 points from 8 games played .... confuse

Have these primates (for so long forgotten in their cage at the bottom of the table) now dveloped some sort of sentient capabilites and can now predict at slightly  better than 50% ? Will they develope this further and become the hot team to beat in 2009, following it up with their highly regarded economic forcast later on in the year ?

How embarassing is it for me to be marooned below them with the humiliating score of 3 points ?

I'm not sure. Just pass me a banana.
